Recently we made a researcher's day by sending him a scanned copy of a letter written by his grandmother in 1931. Using our online index of letters printed in the Mennonite children's periodical, Words of Cheer, he identified a short letter that his grandmother wrote when she was eight years old. Below is a SAMPLE LETTER. (Not the letter referred to above.) The present index includes more than 29,000 letters written between 1921 and 1966. These letters are wonderful because they are one of the only resources we have that include the voices of children. Despite their simplicity, it's great fun to hear what was significant to children at the time. For more information about the collection or to use the index, see https://www.lmhs.org//li/periodicals/words-of-cheer-index/.
