WHAT IS DHS OR DROPPED HEAD SYNDROME? Dropped Head Syndrome is characterized by a chinonchest deformity due to neck flexion, sometimes with minor thoracic or lumbar spinal curvature. The head is in a dropped or floppy position when sitting or standing. This is sometimes caused by specific, generalized neuromuscular diagnosis. If the cause is unknown it is presumed to be an isolated neck extensor myopathy. (INEM) With INEM the head drop usually showing with older adults... and may occur gradually, over weeks to 3-6 months. Dropped head posture is a hallmark feature of Parkinson’s disease, ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig ’s disease, and other neurodegenerative diseases. The stooped positioning has been associated with increased muscle rigidity or stiffness. The typical Parkinson’s posture includes: forward head, rounded shoulders, increased thoracic *kyphosis, (Dropped HeadSyndrome-DHS) increased flexion of the trunk, and bending of the knees. DHS has significant implications on the quality of life of affected individuals, resulting in considerable restrictions to activities of daily living. Socializing, swallowing and eating become difficult to manage causing emotional and physical trauma.
