Dante's Inferno says "I am Lucy" and the footnote says: According to legend, Saint Lucy (Lucia) of Syracuse plucked out her eyes when a persistent suitor expressed his admiration of her eyes. For this act of magnanimous charity, God rewarded Lucy with a pair of even more beautiful eyes; she is the patron saint of those who suffer from defects of sight or from impaired vision. She symbolizes illuminating Grace and intercedes here to help Dante along his journey.
