I just finished burying this ball in the sand for him to try getting the ball out of the bunker. He looked at it when I was done and decided that he wanted to bury it more!! I just started laughing because it’s something I’ve come to expect from him. Bring on the challenge coach. Have I mentioned how much I love teaching golf? Especially to this young man. PSA for today. As someone who spent many years in South Florida I should have known better. The afternoon thunderstorms there are frequent and can be very powerful. During my years there I learned that most lightning strikes happen on the edge of a storm. Something I forgot today. Most people think that if the storm is not right over them it’s not a worry yet and they have some time to hit a few more balls or play that last hole. But if you have time to think that the storm ...is already upon you. And you should be taking cover. Today I was about to start a lesson. The storm was approaching. I forgot that most important fact about lightning strikes most likely happening on the outer edge of a storm. I went into the golf shop to ask them that if they saw lightning to let me know so I could end the lesson. I literally took two steps out of the shop and back toward the teaching room and I heard the loudest crack of lightning I’ve ever heard in my life. I stopped dead in my tracks! I had to take a moment to ask myself if I was still alive- it was that loud! I took another two steps and asked my student to come inside the shop so we could work indoors on putting. I was almost done with his lesson when a woman came in to ask if we had seen where the bolt struck? I had not. She said it hit the area around the 75 yard marker. What?!?! No wonder it had been so loud. She said they saw it as they were pulling into the parking lot. It hit the ground and then they saw smoke come up. Wow that was close. 75 yards away. Now when that bolt cracked every single person on the range made a bee line to the shop or to their car to leave. None of us should have been out there in the first place. Respect Mother Nature.

Contemplate Memorial Day today and every day. Be grateful for those among us and their families who have given the ultimate sacrifice. We appreciate and honor you.
