Today, Mayor William Peduto thanked workers at the Department of Public Safety for their service during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. He also surprised Pittsbu...rgh Bureau of EMS Assistant Chief Mark Pinchalk with the Mayor Sophie Masloff Employee of the Month Award. The Mayor gave a special recognition to Pinchalk, the City’s lead planner for the pandemic, and named today Mark E. Pinchalk Day in the City of Pittsburgh. His family was able to participate via video. Under Mayor Peduto’s direction, Pinchalk and Public Safety Director Wendell Hissrich began planning for the pandemic in January, focusing on protecting residents as well as City workers on the front lines. Pinchalk led efforts to not only respond to the pandemic on a day-to-day basis but also to issue strategic planning in the midst of Public Safety’s response. He authored the COVID-19 Prehospital Infection Guidelines book for EMS. Congratulations Assistant Chief Mark Pinchalk! Well deserved.

While the whole world is talking about COVID-19, we wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of our personnel who are working tirelessly day and night to... keep you safe. Our primary mission is to respond to medical emergencies, and we accomplish that with a minimum compliment of 13 ALS medic units and 3 BLS ambulances. If you believe you or a loved one is having a life-threatening emergency, call 9-1-1! One of our highly trained crews will be there to lend a helping hand, virus or no virus. Stuck above or below, inside or outside, on top of or underneath? We staff two heavy rescue units 24/7 with at least two paramedic rescue technicians to get you back on solid ground. The City of Bridges maintains safety on the water with at least one ALS equipped vessel staffed with two cross-trained paramedic-public safety divers as well as a law enforcement component. This unit is also equipped for rapid deployment anywhere in the city in the event of a flash flood. There are always at least two district chiefs on duty to manage field operations and facilitate our field staff to be able to serve you best. The weight of the uncertainty is putting pressure on everyone across the country. One thing remains unchanged: if you need help here in Pittsburgh, we are here for you. All of our units and teams are fully operational and are completely prepared to support our great city. Remember to follow the safeguards that are put in place including social distancing and mask wearing. There are a lot of questions ahead about how things will evolve. Remember to stay vigilant, stay safe and above all remember that we are in this together. Happy Hump Day, Steel City!

Three year old Andy loves ambulances, so the Pittsburgh Bureau of EMS surprised him with a parade for his birthday - complete with ambulances, a motorcycle, as ...well as its Rescue and HazMat trucks. Happy birthday Andy! We hope you liked the present of lights and sirens just for you. Pittsburgh EMS would also like to take a moment to recognize Andy’s mom, Lisa Podgurski, who is a physician. We thank her and all healthcare workers for the heroic work they have been doing during the pandemic. #HereForYou412
