Meet Dr. Minnie Joycelyn Elders is an American pediatrician and public health administrator who served as Surgeon General of the United States from 1993 to 1994. A vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, she was the second woman, second person of color, and first African American to serve as Surgeon General. Thank you, Dr. Elders.

Today we would like to acknowledge Patricia Goldman-Rakic. She was a professor of neuroscience, neurology, psychiatry and psychology at Yale University School of Medicine and pioneered multidisciplinary research of the prefrontal cortex and working memory. Goldman-Rakic was the first to discover and describe the circuitry of the prefrontal cortex and its relationship to working memory. Previously, scientists thought that the higher cognitive functions of the prefrontal cortex were beyond the scope of scientific study.

Today we recognize Dr. Ann Preston as she was the first woman dean of a medical school. Dr. Preston entered medical school at the age of 38 and graduated in 1851, as one of eight women awarded a medical degree. Great job, Dr. Preston!

Today we recognize and applaud Susan La Flesche Picotte, MD (born June 17, 1865). Dr. Picotte was a Native American doctor and reformer in the late 19th century. She is widely acknowledged as one of the first Native Americans to earn a medical degree.

Today we applaud Dr. Antonia Novello as the first woman and first Hispanic to serve as Surgeon General. Thank you, Dr. Novello for changing history.

Medsurant was happy to sponsor and participate in the 3rd Annual Golf Tournament hosted by The CatfishJake Foundation. The goal of the foundation is to raise money to be able to help families and children affected by Congential Heart Defects; also, young people and adults who are fighting the battle of addiction. Lastly, the foundation has started a scholarship in honor of Jamie Simmons, a great man and a friend who was a talented musician.
