We don't like to fill the page with unwarranted notices and warnings, however, there's been a marked increase in a particular threat, and we need to warn our customers. There has been a noticeable uptick in the number of bogus/scam email recently. They contain a believable message, and a file attachment. All of which appears to be legitimate. But if you open said attachment, well, you've been had. The attachment could be a .pdf, .docx, .xlsx, among others. So.. all ...of this is to say: be on the lookout and be wary of any attachments sent your way. We've seen everything from "FedEx has attempted to deliver your package today at 8:45am, please fill out the attached form, sign it, and we'll attempt to deliver tomorrow", to "Attached is your invoice, along with detailed time records for the Comcast technician that resolved your internet outage". When in doubt, we'd suggest you do the old-fashioned thing and call the company that supposedly sent you the email. Better to err on the side of caution than to have an infected computer, compromised account information, etc. Attached is a sample that I received, recently.

Bogus Call/Website Alert: We have had numerous customers who have had websites prompting them to call a number for support, or to resolve issues, and these are bogus and a scam. If you call the number they will attempt to get access to your computer, or scam you out of money. The same goes for any calls that you receive from someone claiming to need immediate payment via gift cards. They will instruct you to go to a store and purchase gift cards (i.e. iTunes or something similar) and call them with the numbers. Never do this, as it is always a scam (even if they claim to be from Comcast, IRS, PPL, etc..). If you have a pop up like this on your computer, and you can’t close out of it, shutdown or restart your computer to get out of it.

Happily working away on the cameras for Lake Tobias’ new Giraffe Barn. Brought a helper today & Carl does not appear to be pleased .

Spam/Bogus Email Alert: We have had numerous customers who have been receiving bogus emails, that we wanted to make a post highlighting some of the emails so that you can protect yourself. These emails may say they are being sent from "MIS Computers", but the email address they are coming from is not our domain and is bogus. These emails often include links or attachments and reference an order places or an invoice... It is imperative that you double and triple check any emai...l you receive that has an attachment or a link to ensure that it is legitimate before opening. Attached are several examples of the bogus emails that have been received by our customers. The first is an email that seems to be legitimate Apple Store receipt. There are several obvious signs that the email is bogus: Poor grammar: It was only sent notify to you in case you did not make the purchase. The email address that sent the email is highlighted in orange also shows that is did not come from apple.com, but rather idealofficeinc.com. Even if you did believe the email was from Apple... if you hover over the See Bill link, the website address is clearly a junk website and also not anything related to Apple. (see picture) The following email looks to come from MIS Computers but again, the email address highlighted in orange shows otherwise, as does the signature with MIS Computers that has a TX and LA office. In all the scenarios above - the website link that you get will download a Word document attachment, or the attachment will be included with the email. We've posted similar images of those documents before, but this looks and reads slightly different. If you did open the document (which, we are telling you NOT to do), you would see a document that says "This document was created in an earlier version of Word, you must click Enable Editing, and then click Enable Content to view the document. THIS IS THE VIRUS. Enabling Editing and Enabling the Content is allowing the virus to run and will infect your PC. Do not open the document, do not click enable editing or enable content. If you receive a similar email that we've outlined above, and are not sure if it is legitimate, it is best to reach out to the sender via a phone call to verify if they did actually send you the message.
