Makin' it look easy! Ashley recently bowled her first strike during a recent outing with her Direct Support Person at a local bowling alley. Combining socialization with exercise is the perfect combination for a well-rounded afternoon by increasing energy levels and promoting a positive attitude. We are all geared up for the Abilities21 Field Day celebrating kids and all their abilities on Saturday, July 10, from 6 to 8 PM at the South Scranton Little League Field. Abilities21 is a local support group for special needs kids from birth through school-age and their families. The Field Day event will feature local businesses and organizations like NEPA Inclusive who will host a variety of activities from yard games and crafts to fire trucks, a petting zoo, a smoke house, and the K-9 Unit. So bring the family and stop by as we celebrate the abilities in all our kids! Social inclusion--Jonathan and Robbie took a break from the recent heatwave to spend some time playing games in the NEPA Inclusive Smart Tech Center (https://www.nepainclusive.org/smart-tech-resource-center/). Social inclusion is a vital component to the success of growth and development for people with disabilities. Mastering basic social skills goes hand-in-hand with building a career and living an independent life. While there are a variety of ways to help build social ski...lls, it’s important to follow their lead. Stay positive, set a good example, and move gently, at their pace, using kindness and care. It's not as difficult as you think. Modeling empathy and kindness is a good first step. Daily activities like grocery shopping and eating out are great opportunities for socialization skills. Encourage them to make social connections by going bowling, taking group music lessons, or simply volunteering together at a local non-profit, preferably one that's interesting to them like an animal shelter or community garden. Keeping social interactions positive is the best way to help let go of fears and find people they can trust.
