Lots of truth to this!

Rarely do you have a dog that doesn’t cause some chaos. Puppies, bite and chew and get the zoomies. Adolescent dogs can be like teenagers..... don’t tell me what to do!! I am asked if it is ever too late to change behaviors. NO! As long as the dog has cognitive ability. It is certainly easier to train a dog at a young age. You can teach a dog what you want rather than fixing a number of already established bad behaviors. Don’t think the ship has sailed if your adult dog is d...oing things you are just dealing with. Get help and fix the behaviors. On some occasions I have just taught a dog to walk nicely on a leash. That might be the biggest concern. Each of these dogs are at different stages . Some young, some now adults. Remember there is no perfect dog, the more we communicate what we want the closer you can get. See more

Place in tandem! After using 2 of the three as a distraction for another dog we take a photo op. Good pups

Lots of practice today. Different platforms, additional dogs for distractions. Sometimes Cooper is spot on and other times he breaks when I give another dog a command. That is how he will learn. A good rainy day activity when we can’t get out.

Cooper loves to rush through a doorway to get out to play. Add another dog and he is even more excited to be first. I am teaching him to wait at the doorway but he still struggles at times. He has literally jumped completely over a dog in front of him if they are released at the same time. I also practice releasing them by their name, so the dog must listen to be called and released. All difficult for this young energetic dog! Fortunately we go out a lot, so I will keep working.

Cooper testing his skills going to Place. I want him to go there easily, and stay until released. Toys other dogs do not change the fact that I gave him a command and I expect compliance. I am often asked if other dogs in the house must also be in Place at the same time. No! A command your dog is given applies to them. I often have a dog roaming around while another is in Place. Cooper continues to improve, he especially needs to learn to relax. Playtime is not all the time!

Yesterday I was holding the line Cooper was attached to. Today I am in a low distraction area with just my dogs. I will continue to give him the feeling of being free and recalling him when he is distracted. The ball definitely keeps his focus on me, however I also want him to run around and recall without the ball. A road trip to a busy park will be the next outing. Other dogs, bicycles, sports activities will be a great distraction.

Let’s talk food drive. That is a dogs interest in working for their food. Sometimes putting down a bowl to eat isn’t the best for training. It is well known that a food motivated dog is more compliant in training. They essentially work for their food. A puppy is happily compliant learning new concepts when there is food involved. In fact training is fun for them because they get something enjoyable. Teaching a puppy about a crate is also a time when food can make that intro...duction less stressful. Picky eaters can be especially difficult when training. When there is not a motivator what gets the dog to do as you ask? Some dogs are toy motivated and the toy works like food for the dog. I generally do not recommend leaving a dogs food down for grazing. Rather teach the dog you give the food to eat and than it goes away if not eaten. This helps to build food drive. I also believe in feeding a dog the best you can. I am not a kibble feeder but each person has to do as they are comfortable with. This is sweet Lola, a picky eater.

Cooper is learning to come when called. I am using tone on a remote to teach him I am talking to him. Sometimes I say his name and come, sometimes I just say come. Of course I get all three most of the time! He struggles when I go inside the house and want him to also come in. Sometimes he would prefer to stay out. Remember Come needs to be positive. We don’t want a dog not sure if he is in trouble. Lots of long line work at this stage.

Don’t we all want well behaved dogs? Sometimes we get one and everything falls in to place, they are pleasers. There are other times we do the same things with the next dog and nothing seems to work. The housebreaking is difficult, the dog chews everything up. We just struggle. Training is the answer, dogs don’t come with a preprogrammed road map. In fact many will do what works for them. Jumping gets attention, barking gets your attention. Stealing gets them chased. Rememb...er negative attention is still attention. Just like two children in a family can be so very different. Dogs are the same. Just because you didn’t train your last dog is not going to influence whether the new dog needs a little more. Cutie Haley is learning her basic behaviors at a young age. She is starting off learning what is wanted rather than fixing what is not.

When you put in the time and training things are going to get better. The jumping , biting, and barking can all improve if you address the problems. Using treats are great for teaching a young dog a new concept. You cannot expect that to work for every behavior. Highly aroused dogs often do not want food at all. Now what?? Remember dogs are opportunists. They will do what works. Do the work and your dog will know the rules. Address the problems and the problems go away.

There are times when you have to force a dog to do something they would not ordinarily choose to do. Duke is that type of dog. Very scared, hesitant to venture out away from his owners. He is not interested in going towards another dog or person but wants to just stay where he is comfortable. Unfortunately that leaves Duke stuck, never progressing forward. Place has been taught because these nervous dogs don’t know what to do when an uncomfortable situation presents itself. ...This helps to clarify, this is what you should do. Go to Place and stay there where you are safe. I decided to also get Duke out with Harper(sorry for the wind). Again this started as an uncomfortable situation for Duke. He wanted no part of it. Gladly as we walked he settled down. Again, to move Duke forward he must be pushed out of his comfort zone. No coddling, or babying will help this nervous boy. Face your fears Duke! See more
