Today is National Nurses Day and the start of National Nurses Week. This began as a celebration of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing in the late 19th century. Her innovative implementation of strict hand washing and hygiene practices reduced the death rate of wounded soldiers in the Crimean War by 40%.
