Be sure to stop by and check out all the great gifts, including wonderful toys for cats! Now THAT'S a #catguy!
Pie snuck into the SUV yesterday and hid from her mom until they were about 5 mins from the clinic to pick up their cats. She loves cats, kids, and car rides. It was a long ride from home in Honey Grove, Juniata County, but we're sure mom didn't notice Pie at all during the ride down!
As a follow up to yesterday's post about summer caretaking tips, here's a great article from the NYC Feral Cat Alliance, including lots of great recommendations about flea management: http://www.animalalliancenyc.org//medicating-feral-cats-k/
Summer Caretaking Tips: Stick to a feeding schedule. Don't leave food out for long periods of time or you will likely attract flying and/or crawling insects, slugs, and/or hungry wildlife. Feed approximately 1 to 1 and 1/2 cups of dry food per cat at the same time in the same place per day. This way the food should be eaten within an hour or so. You may also want to refrain from using canned food during the hottest weather, as this quickly attracts insects and/or becomes dang...erous to eat if left out in hot weather for too long. Got Bugs? Place a small bowl in the middle of a slightly larger bowl, a shallow tray or a flower-pot saucer and then add about a half an inch of water in the bottom to create a barrier for crawling insects. OR Surround food bowls with a ring of baking soda or food-grade diatomaceous earth (free of chemical additives and NOT DE for swimming pools) to discourage crawling insects (and slugs!). Elevating feeding stations slightly off the ground also helps to deter insects. Keep them hydrated. Make sure you provide plenty of water and try to place water bowls in a shaded area or feeding station out of the worst of the summer heat. Try using narrower, deeper water bowls to reduce the rate of evaporation. Put out extra bowls for summer. Try adding ice cubes to delay heating. Provide shade if you can. Many colonies have their own preferred shady spots under bushes or undergrowth and/or under decks and porches, sheds or other structures. If possible, you can create shade with patio umbrellas, tarps, or chairs, and if you can, make sure shelters aren't directly on concrete or macadem, which heats up quickly in the hot weather. Do you have a tip to share? Post it here so other caretakers can benefit from your good idea!

Congratulations to Jen Wentzel and all the wonderful volunteers of the Cornwall Community Cats program! Working with various non-profit partners and local veterinarians, the group has spayed or neutered 63 cats since its inception in September 2019 and placed 37 kittens for adoption! Imagine all the kittens who will not be born in the future and how much better the lives of those 100 cats and kittens are today thanks to that amazing collaborative effort and so much hard work and dedication! Community cats initiatives depend on the support of the local community and Cornwall residents really stepped up! https://www.facebook.com/CornwallTNR

Colony caretakers in Upper Allen Township, Cumberland County -- You can now receive vouchers to cover services at our spay/neuter clinic! Upper Allen Township has a new voucher program to cover the per-cat fee for our standard service (spay/neuter surgery, ear tip, parasite treatment, post-operative antibiotic injection, and rabies and distemper vaccinations). Vouchers are only for free-roaming cats who will be returned to their outdoor homes through Trap Neuter Return (TNR). If you are caring for a colony in the township, stop by the township building at 100 Gettysburg Pike in Mechanicsburg to pick up your vouchers. Any questions? Contact Promyse Mountz in the Community Development Department during regular business hours by calling 717-766-0756.
February is Spay Neuter Awareness Month. The community cats, after a brief break in late fall and early winter, begin reproducing again with the winter solstice as daylight hours lengthen. Within 64 days the kittens appear and any of those surviving to fall will start the cycle too. #tnrsaveslives #tnrworks #nobodyscats #communitycats #nobodyscatsfoundation #spayandneuter #southcentralpa #centralpa
