TIS THE SEASON OF THE URBAN LEGEND OF POINSETTIAS Once upon a time in 1919 in Hawaii, an Army officer’s two-year old was found dead next to a poinsettia shrub. ...It was rumored that the child had ingested poinsettia leaves and died. Twenty-five years later this urban legend was so popular that it was published as fact in the book, Poisonous Plants of Hawaii. The actual truth is, the event never happened. Today you can still light up the Internet like a Christmas tree when growers, garden writers, and social media posts a positive article on this beautiful holiday plant. The uproar from horrified parents and pet-owners is that poinsettias are fatally toxic. The truth is that a 25 lb. child would have to eat 500 600 poinsettia leaves to get a stomachache, something that would happen if a child ate 500 600 leaves of any common plant found in a landscape, including vegetables. In 1996, nearly 850,000 cases of plants being eaten or touched were investigated by the American Association of Poison Control Centers. Poinsettia plants were the subject of 22,793 cases and the focus of the research to assess toxicity and fatality of eating poinsettia plants. No human deaths were reported out of all the cases. Accidents, involving mostly children, were responsible for nearly 99% of the cases, Many patients in these incidents did not need hospital treatment and most did not develop any major side effects from eating or touching the poinsettia. For pets, the same side effects of irritation, stomachaches, and vomiting happened but no fatalities. . The miracle this Christmas is that you can enjoy your beautiful holiday poinsettias. It's a good rule of thumb all year to keep supervision of small children and chewing-stage pets anytime they are around indoor or outdoor plants. The best way to spread this Christmas cheer is educating that poinsettias are not fatal loud enough for all to hear. ~ tw AMERICAN JOURNAL OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE: https://bit.ly/34fxZwt MAYO CLINIC: https://mayocl.in/2Wik7gx SNOPES: https://bit.ly/3mkKvAI UF EDU: https://bit.ly/2WjhDyc OSU EDU: https://bit.ly/2JVNa7a ASPCA: https://bit.ly/3mkSaiK PETPOISONCONTROL: https://bit.ly/3oTCy7y FFA FACTS: https://bit.ly/38jzZoL Photo credit: UF EDU Contact your local Extension office to find information specific to your location.
