February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness and focusing on advocacy and education to stop dating abuse before it starts. This year's theme from Love is respect is #TalkAboutIt. Recognizing that the experience of trauma affects a person’s sense of safety and well-being, NOVA counseling services are provided free of charge to support an individual and their family, as well as to empower clients in their effort to regain control over their lives. Today, NOVA honors the start of Black History Month. NOVA's mission is to support, counsel, and empower victims of sexual assault and other serious crimes. Black and brown folx experience sexual violence at a disproportionately higher rate than white folx. Over 18% of black and brown individuals will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime; that percentage comes only from those who reported their experience (According to National Organization for Women (NOW)).
