On Tuesday, December 15th at approximately 1000 hours Perry County Sheriff’s Deputies Jared Charles and Andrew Bustin were conducting civil process and driving in the area of 1900 State Road, Penn Township, Perry County, when dispatch aired a structure fire at Mid-Penn Service, 1909 State Road. Deputy Charles and Deputy Bustin were the first on scene. Employees for Mid-Penn were outside and advised the deputies that there are two occupied apartments above the garage and acces...s to them was at the rear of the building. Deputy Charles and Deputy Bustin ran to the rear of the building and observed a family of two adults, three children, and two dogs, exiting the second story window onto a metal overhang. Deputy Bustin positioned the patrol vehicle under the metal overhang. Heavy smoke was billowing from the building and the side of the building was fully involved. Deputy Charles utilized the top of the patrol vehicle to remove the family from the roof handing them off to Deputy Bustin on the ground. At that time the Deputies were advised that a woman was residing in the second apartment which was fully involved. Deputy Charles and Deputy Bustin were unable to gain access to the second apartment due to the flames. Deputy Charles then located the woman from the second apartment at the front of the building. The woman was in critical condition from burns and injuries after jumping from her second story apartment window. Deputy Charles carried the woman from the parking lot to a patrol car to render aid until EMS arrived on scene.
