How can brushing your teeth keep you from catching pneumonia? When a patient experiences dry mouth as a side effect of medication, it becomes more difficult for them to swallow, which heightens the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Research shows that oral care, among other quality improvement efforts, significantly decreases the incidence of non-ventilator-associated hospital-acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) and ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP). Better yet, oral care is a simple solution that often can be performed by the patient on their own, which engages them in their own care and prepares them to continue good oral hygiene once they are sent home. Did you know? You should still get vaccinated for COVID-19 even if you have been sick with it before. Reinfection with the virus is possible, and you could get ...severely ill from COVID-19. Experts aren’t sure how long someone is protected from getting sick again after recovering. Both natural immunity and immunity from a vaccine are important aspects of COVID-19 that experts are trying to learn more about. CDC will keep you informed as new evidence becomes available. Have you been suffering #alarmfatigue? Clinicians rely on #TelemetryMonitoring every day to care for patients, but it can be a double-edged sword: With more ways to track every aspect of patients’ health, come more alertsand the risk of becoming desensitized to them. We interviewed national experts and hospital staff about how they overcame patient safety challenges related to #telemetry. Our four-part video series, Telemetry Monitoring in Pennsylvania, highlights the need to review and improve processes, and presents best practices and lessons learned, which may help guide you in your own work. Our own JoAnn Adkins, BSN, RN, was one of five infection preventionists (IPs) that APIC - Infection Prevention and You interviewed for an article in the Fall 2020 issue of their journal, PREVENTION STRATEGIST. In These Are Extreme Times, they shared their experiences with COVID-19 in diverse care settings in the United States. About the early days of the pandemic and the vital role IPs have been playing during it, JoAnn said, Infection preventionists are a very creative group. Prior to guidance being issued, many IPs came up with unique ideas to prevent transmission and spread. We are very proud of JoAnn’s contribution to this article and her work with long-term care facilities in Pennsylvania! COVID-19 is on everyone’s mind, but as we move into flu season, we also need to consider influenza and pneumonia. Researchers looked at how failures in processes to diagnose and treat respiratory infections can increase risk of spreading them among staff and patients, by analyzing 338 events related to viruses and bacteria spread through respiratory droplets reported by Pennsylvania hospitals in 2019. They discovered that more than half of these events (54.9%) were associated with processes for testing and handling lab specimens, while the remainder involved isolation procedures (29.7%) and treatment (15.4%).
