Thank you to all of our patients and referring providers for being so understanding as Alyssa continues to recover from surgery! With nose tubes/ splints limiting air flow, coordination of chewing, swallowing, and breathing have been especially difficult for Alyssa. It’s also been difficult for her to achieve good oral rest posture (nasal breathing, lip closure, and palatal tongue rest position). Alyssa had the tubes in her nose removed yesterday. This 15 year old male patient presented with a parafunctional habit of lip biting. The lips are Nature's retainers and the lips should be completely closed. Lip... biting can act as a functional orthodontic appliance that can exacerbate a dental malocclusion and affect stabilization of orthodontic treatment. It separates the cerebellum from the occipital lobe. It spans from temporal bone to temporal bone and, when restricted, can compress the skull left to right and limit temporal motion. This can result in symptoms such as headaches, vertigo and poor balance/coordination. Various types of cranial work can be very helpful.
