Important Beginning Monday, September 14th, 2020 the Pioneer Tunnel will be closed Monday-Friday for tours. We will remain open on the weekends until the end of our season on October 31st, 2020. We welcome any group reservations (25 or more) for week day visits. If you have a group that would like to tour the mine send us a message or give us a call at (570) 875-3850. We request that you give us a 72 hour notice for any group reservations. After October 31st, 2020 we wi...ll close (as normal) for the off season and we have plans to open on April 1st, 2021 for our 59th season! The decision to close Monday-Friday to the general public was not an easy decision. This pandemic has adversely affected so many businesses in our region, including us, and it will continue to do so throughout the new year. Our mission has always been to educate the public on the rich history of the anthracite coal region and we hope to do so for many years to come. We are a non-profit organization relying heavily on admission fees to cover our expenses. We work with a small staff of dedicated employees. This season we tried to navigate running a tourist attraction during a pandemic, it wasn’t easy to say the least, but our faithful staff and committed board of directors made it possible. We made mistakes and learned valuable lessons for the future and we can’t say thank you enough for being patient with us this summer!
