"From Pittsburgh to Detroit and Phoenix, condos and townhouses within stumbling distance of bars and restaurants are hot. Like the families now upgrading to bigger suburban homes, young white-collar workers are taking advantage of record-low mortgage rates and flexible remote-work policies to move to desirable cities with relative affordability." http://ow.ly/6vOq50DvCbz

The City of Pittsburgh owns 1,124 properties in Homewood. 700 of those properties are vacant lots. The lack of care and maintenance to these properties forces m...any residents to take care of them on their own, placing the burden back on the residents. It is time for the City to take seriously its commitment to being the most liveable city for everyone. "'In this case, I would argue that the city is a slumlord that is consciously participating in the underdevelopment of the community, said Henry Louis Taylor Jr., a professor in the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and associate director of the Community Health Equity Research Institute at the University of Buffalo.'"

Decades of government-sanctioned housing discrimination reverberate through the country. Impoverished Black Americans, including residents of Cuney Homes, where... George Floyd was raised, overwhelmingly live in neighborhoods with poor access to top-rated schools, public services and jobs limiting their earning potential. While there have been attempts to address the disparities caused by deeply entrenched racism, including housing vouchers and federal directives to desegregate neighborhoods, success remains elusive like a mother’s efforts to protect her Black son from his surroundings while looking for a way out.
