It is not very often that we get the opportunity to toot our own horn, but this weekend we will! Our Director, Ken Hickman, will be recognized this coming Sunday by the Centre County Historical Society as one of their John H. Ziegler Historic Preservation Award honorees. Since 1988, the Centre County Historical Society (CCHS) has annually recognized individuals and organizations for their outstanding work in preserving and interpreting Centre County history. Historic preserva...tion and advocacy projects from around the county will be featured on Sunday, January 31 at 3:00 p.m via Zoom. Ken’s work at the Penn State All-Sports Museum has garnered him the honor of receiving the History and Heritage Award this year and our team could not be more proud! Today’s #CollectionSpotlight is the NCAA Men’s Volleyball Championship Banner from 2002 when Penn State hosted the tournament at Rec Hall. The Penn State Men's Volleyball team from 2002 had an amazing season. 25-4 on the year, the Penn State Nittany Lions were undefeated at home (15-0) and in conference play (14-0). Our men would go on to win the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) title and compete in the NCAA Tournament that year, which was held at Rec Ha...ll. Unfortunately, our squad would go on to lose in the semi-finals to eventual champion Hawai’i*. Even with the loss, the season was an incredible success for the team. Senior setter José Quiñones was named Penn State Athlete of the Year and earned American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) First-team All-America Team honors. Teammates Zelimir Koljesar, Ricky Mattei and Zach Slenker were all given AVCA Second-Team All-America honors as well. This banner from the 2002 NCAA Championships represents the phenomenal season our Nittany Lions had and how they got to end it all at home in Rec Hall. *Hawai’i has since had this championship win revoked due to playing an ineligible athlete. Today’s #CollectionSpotlight is a head shot of Penn State Women's Tennis player Rebecca Ho. Rebecca Ho joined the Penn State Women’s Tennis team as an incoming freshman in 1999 and made an immediate impact. Due to injuries that red-shirted teammates Alison Barnett and Pilar Montgomery, Ho took on the #1 position for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Although her singles record wasn’t great (ending the season 15-19) her doubles record with teammate Martina Kopacova was much bette...r at 23-14). In her junior year Ho posted a 25-13 record in the #2 position and was named a 1st team All-American. She went 9-1 in Big Ten play and amassed a 18-5 dual match record. Teaming with fellow All-Big Ten pick Montgomery, Ho posted a 24-11 mark at # 1 doubles, including a 15-7 dual match mark and a 5-5 mark in Big Ten Conference competition. Today’s #CollectionSpotlight is a Penn State Men’s varsity S sweater worn by 1938 varsity letterwinner Jim Ickes. Jim Ickes was a member of one of the best squads Penn State Men's Soccer has ever produced. Continuing the incredible unbeaten streak of the past 5 seasons, the Penn State Nittany Lions went 8-0 on the season and kept 6 of those opponents scoreless. Their incredible talent led them to earn the undisputed Eastern Intercollegiate Soccer title and continue an undefeated streak that began in 1932. This team also set a Penn State record for most goals in a game, beating Western Maryland 12-0. Today’s #CollectionsSpotlight is a photograph of the 1938 Freshman Penn State Cross Country and Track and Field Athletic teams of today are very different from their predecessors. In 1938, it was still the norm for incoming freshman to play and compete on freshman only squads. Penn State Nittany Lions Cross Country was no different. This photograph of the 1938 Freshman team shows the value of training the upcoming generation. Although we have limited information about how th...is particular team performed during the regular season, we do know that they went on to win the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Freshman Cross Country Championship. 5 Penn State runners finished in the first 19 places, including future Olympian Herman Goffberg (third from the left) placing 3rd. Today's #CollectionSpotlight is the 2014-15 Penn State Women's Ice Hockey Yearbook. Penn State Women's Hockey is the most recent women's Penn State Nittany Lions team to join the varsity ranks at Penn State. Beginning varsity competition in 2012, our women's team had a rough first two seasons. Even with the early disappointments, our women persevered and in 2014-15 had their first winning season. In their 3rd year, they went 17-16-4 and 9-9-2 in the College Hockey America co...nference they compete in. Although printed before the season began, this yearbook is a symbol of the determination our women’s ice hockey team has shown to continually improve and advance. Today’s #CollectionSpotlight is a photo of the first varsity level Penn State Women's Soccer team from 1994. In 1977, a group of women formed a club soccer team as an offshoot to the men’s club team. Two years later, Penn State recognized Women’s Club Soccer as an independent club sport. Fifteen years after that, Penn State Women’s Soccer would gain varsity status. Due to the superb club talent that fed into the first varsity squad, the team was an immediate success. Going 14...-4-1 in their inaugural season, which included an upset of then #8 Wisconsin in Madison. Our women also went 5-2-1 in conference play. Their record earned them a #2 seed in the Big Ten Conference Tournament where they went on to tie for 2nd with Michigan. Michigan would go on to advance to the NCAA Tournament on penalty kicks, but our women showed that they had the grit to compete in the big leagues from the very start. This photo of our 1994 inaugural Women’s Soccer team reminds us of the women who pioneered the successful program we have today.
