A favorite saying of mine when someone feels they don't deserve to heal because it "wasn't as bad as (insert terrible thing), is "Identify don't compare". Your pain is valid and you deserve to heal from it. Here for you, Lois
Yesterday as I was surfing Facebook, I saw a post that I thought was "cute and ironic". I clicked love and moved on. Later in the day, I was tagged by a stranger asking me if I had read the comments. Since I was one of the first ones liking the post (and had tagged someone in it), there weren't any comments yet when I viewed the post. ... When I went back and read the comments, I had a flood of emotions. Guilt, shame, sadness, embarrassment. I had only read that post through my eyes, not considering it could feel harmful for people that have been "othered" by the previous generations and previous administration. People of color, people who identify as LBGTIQ+, people of different religions other than Christianity, were commenting on how it wasn't "cute or ironic", it was harmful to them. After feeling all the feelings (after all, I practice being an ally and anti-racist), I thanked the person who called me out, I changed my comment, and unliked the post. I'm grateful that someone with a different perspective allowed me to change my mind about something I initially saw as "cute and ironic". I'm grateful I have the ability to change my mind about all sorts of topics. The older I get, the more I see I have been wrong about a LOT of things in my life.
