#TrialTuesday Featured Clinical Trial: African American Families Fighting Parental Cancer Together, funded by the National Cancer Institute. https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03567330 Who is leading the study?... Alliric Willis, MD, FACS, co-principal investigator (pictured), is working with Dr. Adam Davey at the University of Delaware. Dr. Willis is a Professor in the Department of Surgery at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. What are the goals of the study? The study is for African American families with at least one child between the ages of 12 and 18 years living at home in which a parent or grandparent, who is the main caregiver, has been diagnosed with stage I, II, or III solid tumor cancer in the last 12 months. To date, there are no studies that focus on emotional distress in African American families experiencing solid tumor cancers. The main goal of this study is to compare Families Fighting Cancer Together (FFCT), a transportable family-based intervention, to standard adult psycho-education in African American families. How might patients and community members benefit? Results from this study will be applied to future research and to help create a culturally sensitive intervention appropriate to reach African American families. If proven effective, FFCT can be used as an intervention to improve developmental adjustment to this significant life stressor at a critical point in the lives of adolescents. How might patients and community members get involved? This study is actively recruiting families fighting cancer, and community members could benefit from participation. If interested in joining the study or obtaining more information, please contact the study team at 215-503-1765.

SKCC clinical trial spotlight: "A Text-based Intervention in Improving Adherence to Hormone Therapy in Patients With Stage I-III Hormone Receptor Positive Breast Cancer," led by Kuang-Yi Wen, PhD, Associate Professor, Division of Population Science This trial studies how well a text-based intervention works in improving adherence to hormone therapy in patients with stage I-III hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. Women often require long-term therapy with adjuvant hormon...e therapy to prevent the cancer from returning and to improve overall survival. Side effects from hormone therapy may prevent some women from staying adherent to their medication therapy. A text-based intervention may provide educational information to these breast cancer patients, as well as remind and motivate them to continue treatment. Learn more: http://ow.ly/3H7F50C0Sfz

The Tomosynthesis Mammographic Imaging Screening Trial (TMIST) is a randomized breast cancer screening study. TMIST is important to the future of breast cancer screening because it will help provide knowledge about how to move beyond a current one size fits all approach, where most women are screened the same way based on age-specific guidelines. The TMIST clinical trial will help move clinicians toward a more personalized approach that tailors mammography for each woman based on her own genetics and individual risk factors for developing breast cancer. Jefferson is currently one of the sites recruiting for this clinical trial. For more information, visit the ECOG-ACRIN Cancer Research Group website at ecog-acrin.org/tmist or call Jefferson at 215-955-6084.
