With Christmas just around the corner, we wanted to highlight a very special family, the Hilliards (including Mrs. Brittany Hilliard, her husband Chris, Chris's now daughter, Ava, and Ava's little brother, Greyson). Attorney Miller was privileged to help cement the already existing bonds of love and affection between these four (Greyson wiggled out of these pictures!) by finalizing Ava's adoption this passed Adoption Day, just in time for the holidays. Due to the pandemic,... we could not be present in court for Ava to experience this very special proceeding, so Skala Miller brought the family and the experience to our offices! Adoption is one of our favorite practice areas, because it helps build permanence and stability in the lives of so may deserving children. Thank you to the Hilliards for sharing this special day with us! P.S. It was only sparkling juice, but Ava enjoyed it enough to take the second bottle for the road!

If you’re going to get a #divorce we suggest you do it in style. Our own Denise Salvio was beyond excited to officially move on with her life today! In fact, she was so excited that she picked up her Divorce Decree at the courthouse in this elegant attire, including a tiara. We are so very happy for Denise and we look forward to seeing her continue to prosper as she turns the page to her next exciting chapter!

COVID-19 PANDEMIC UPDATE: For our business clients and those currently receiving unemployment assistance, please see the guidance below from the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry regarding Governor Wolf's comments made on April 20, 2020. ----... Dear Chamber Members, Yesterday during a press briefing, Gov. Tom Wolf was asked by a reporter whether unemployment compensation benefits can be revoked if an employee refuses to return to work in favor of continuing to collect unemployment. Gov. Wolf stated that benefits could not be revoked and appeared to endorse this abuse of the UC system by telling employers they simply must increase compensation. The governor's response can be viewed here at minute 16:50. This statement from the Governor not only sends the wrong message, it could be financially devastating to employers and could put employees at significant legal risk if they believe him to be accurate. To clarify, per state law, absent 'good cause,' it constitutes an act of fraud to refuse suitable work in order to receive unemployment benefits. The Department of Labor & Industry even has a page on its website solely for employers to report refusals to work. Additionally, many Pennsylvania employers prohibited from operating have been able to survive so far through federal loans that may be forgiven if employers keep employees on payroll. However, if employees follow the Governor's suggestion to remain collecting benefits, their employer's loan forgiveness may be jeopardized, costing individual small businesses and nonprofits hundreds of thousands, if not millions of dollars. Following the briefing, the PA Chamber issued a statement clarifying the language of the law and we have also been in contact with the administration seeking a public correction to the governor's statements. As always, please feel free to reach out with any questions or if we can be of greater assistance.

Skala Miller 15.03.2020

One big lesson in these difficult times: There is a great deal of uncertainty as to our personal, financial, and business matters. When things return to normal, some of us will need to pursue litigation to protect our interests and rights. This could include, among many other things, personal or business financial issues, contract disputes, employment and unemployment issues, estate litigation, family matters, criminal defense, and so much more. ... If you or anyone you know believes that you may need protection, the first and most important step you can take is to document, document, document! What does that mean? The easiest and most lawful way to document issues is to put them in writing. If you have a potential dispute, put your concerns in writing ASAP and physically hand it to the other party. In the era of social distancing, certified mail is the next best approach. Last in line is a well-known and used email address of the other party. Try to avoid text messaging, unless you have reason to be certain who is on the other side responding. The old saying to remember is this: the palest ink is clearer than the sharpest memory. Avoid he said, she said, etc. disputes. And, at the end of the day, set up a call with a lawyer if you aren’t sure of what to do. Stay safe, be safe, in all things. P.S. If you have any stories about documenting or not documenting you are willing and able to share, please feel free!

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update: Effective March 19, 2020, at 8:00 p.m., Governor Tom Wolf has ordered all non-life sustaining businesses in Pennsylvania to close physical locations until further notice. This includes law offices. The Governor's Order does permit "virtual or telework operations (e.g., work from home)." Effective immediately, our office will operate virtually and over the phone. ... Fortunately for our current and prospective clients, Skala Miller has had measures in place for years, that utilize the most current technology for the great convenience of our current and prospective clients. If you have a legal issue, even in this difficult time, we are still here for you. Do not hesitate to contact our normal office phone number, 724-221-6886, or complete an intake from our website. We are conducting meetings and consultations via telephone, and we have the capability to provide the vast majority of needed documentation and information collection through both computers and smartphones. All we need is your email address. No matter the hurdles, we remain committed to doing our best to bring honesty and experience to those who need our help, including, for now, from the comfort and safety of your home. We are stronger together, in all things. Stay safe, be safe.

Skala Miller 15.01.2020

COVID-19 (coronavirus) Update: As a client-focused firm, we are taking precautions to ensure that those we serve and those who serve our clients do not become ill. At this time, our office remains functional, with the attorneys and staff utilizing measures we have previously implemented to communicate with prospective and existing clients, send documents, and conduct information collection. ... We are attempting to limit in-person contact to the greatest extent possible, and we are presently conducting most meetings and consultations over the phone. Thankfully, the modern technology we have put in place over the years has allowed us to continue serving our existing and prospective clients with the least interruption possible. We have been informed of several judicial emergencies declared by the Supreme Court, appeals courts, and county courts, including Westmoreland County. In many cases, this will mean that the courts are not considering matters in person, and that court operations may be postponed or partially interrupted for a period of approximately thirty (30) days, unless extended further. In each and every case, we are following up with the courts to ensure compliance with all health and legal requirements, on behalf of our clients. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the office, or email our staff or your attorney. Stay safe, everyone!
