Preparation and knowledge can make you a safer driver on snow-covered roads! Follow these tips: Carry a winter emergency travel kit and your cellphone. Lis...ten to weather and travel advisories (and if you don't have to travel in bad weather, don't!) Keep your gas tank at least half full. Slow down, increase following distance, and avoid sudden stops. Beware of roads that may look wet, but are actually frozen, often referred to as "black ice." Use extra caution on bridges and ramps, where ice can often form without warning. Do not use cruise control while driving on snow-covered roads. State law requires you to turn on your headlights when your wipers are on. Use your low beams in particularly bad weather, especially in cases of heavy or blowing snow. Remove ice and snow from your entire vehicle before you drive and as often as needed. Do not park or abandon your vehicle on snow emergency routes during a storm. Always wear your seat belt! #PAWinter #BeSafePA

Borough of Throop DPW continues to do a great job! Though the majority of the snow has finished falling, snowplow operations will continue through the day. Have you ever asked yourself, "Why do snow plows block my driveway?" Well, you're not alone. Municipalities across the nation get the same complaints after every major snowstorm.... Snowplow operators do not place snow in driveways on purpose. There is no practical way for the snowplow operator to cut off the windrow of snow when crossing a driveway. This problem is especially acute in cul-de-sacs because of the space. One thing you can do to reduce the amount of snow that is plowed in front of your driveway is to place as much of the snow as possible to the right side of your drive as you face the street. Please be careful when shoveling snow and don't forget, take frequent breaks to avoid over-exertion!
