ANA NEWS EDITORIAL A RENEWED AFRICA It is a sad fact that for quite some time now Africa has played host to civil-wars, poverty, corruption, diseases, etc. Also, as Africans, throughout our Continent, we have engaged in a countless number of struggles, including those against colonialism and apartheid, etc. Whereas we have surmounted a few these challenges (colonialism, apartheid), it may safely be argued that we are unquestionably surrounded by numerous, co...unting the burdens placed upon us by ourselves, and as wee, our elected officials. Today, fellow Africans, in our quest for A RENEWED AFRICA, it is our hopes and prayers that we rise to the sundry trials and exercise what appears as our most critically important rights to self-determination, independence, and lasting peace. Those sustained, heroic battles won by our ancestors never had as one of its objectives that liberated Africa should be the home of poverty, corruption, diseases, and probably, conflict and instability. In all our ordealsrich or poor; educated or uneducated; partisans or non-partisans; etc., as oppressed Africans or African, confronted with problems, we took up arms to end colonial and apartheid domination. We did this to defeat and eradicate colonial and apartheid oppression and achieve a just peace for all our countries. Today, fellow Africans, no matter where we find ourselvesNigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Uganda, Congo, etc., we can instead, use our voices, pens or pencils, networks, educations, skills, resources, etc., to put an to the problems faced. Surely, we must be consistently reminded that the objective reality of the battles encountered and won by our descendants was never intended to have our liberated Continent become the main global home of UN Peace Operations. We surely have an obligation to exercise our hard-won right to self-determination and independence effectively to address the humiliating reality of the persistent ills on our Continent and the unwelcome and painful consequences it has imposed on the masses of Africa. In so doing, we have calculated the associated consequences, and have vowed never to keep quiet on issues that matter to us, Africans. As such, we are aware that many may be detested or antagonized by loved ones, yet, we urge us all to be equally guided by the wise words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who once said, when confronted with challenges, In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. Today, I say to you, all, DON’T KEEP SILENT. LET’S DO ALL WE CAN FOR A RENEWED AFRICA, where poverty, corruption, diseases, etc., can become a battle of the past. Harrington B.
