POSTCARD FROM A HUMMINGBIRDOaxaca is both a state and a city in far southern Mexico. The name predates the Aztec and refers to the local Guaje tree. Right now, some of the very Ruby-throated Hummingbirds that so delighted you last spring and summer are in those Guaje trees. But you can also find them swaying in the breeze on the stalls of local artists - in the form of alebrije. The Mexican folk art form literally emerged from the fever dream of an ill artist during the 1930s. Since then, its brightly colored and fantastical animal forms have become a staple of Mexican artistic expression, and the Oaxacans are especially adept at its creation. While it’s hard to top nature’s design for the Hummingbird, the alebrije is a pretty good second!
