Please join us for The Fast of Healing and Reconciliation (Segaki) House of MeditationHarrisburg ... via Facebook Live Monday, October 26th 6:30pm Dear Friends, In preparation for the upcoming Ceremony of Healing and Reconciliation (Segaki), please take the time to reflect on those things from the past that you would like to liturgically let go of and start the new cycle of the seasons with a fresh heart and mind. Because we are doing the service virtually from the Dragonfly Temple, please have your home altars ready. Instead of the outdoor fire rite, we will be doing it inside. Write down on a piece of paper the things you wish to make an Accord with and release. During the period of the ceremony where we make the offering, you will light the paper from a candle and place the paper in your incense bowl filled with sand. Please be careful in doing so and take all necessary precautions for safety. This is a Fasting observance so, if it is safe for you to do health-wise, consider fasting for the day of the Ceremony. I usually only consume liquids that day. I will explain during the sermon why we observe this practice. This is a powerful practice and can be an amazing time to heal from situations in the past. Dear Friends- I want to let everyone know about the upcoming Zen Peacemakers retreat:

A beautiful tribute by our own Shuso, Mike Travisano: A Buddhist Eulogy for Eddie Van Halen Nothing comes from nothing. Nothing exists in and of itself. In Bud...dhism, this is known as emptiness, or sunyata. We tend to think that things exist on their own. At a glance, the world certainly can look that way. A leaf clings to a branch only as long as it can, and then, becoming too tired, it lets go and falls away, blowing from its trunk and branches, browning, becoming transparent and torn, and returning to what we don’t know. Once upon its time, the leaf was vibrant. It gulped sunlight, glistened in the rain, and when it was so inspired by the wind that it couldn’t help itself, it sang to all of its brothers and sisters and to everything it couldn’t describe. The story of the leaf’s life is both beautiful and sad, but it is also a delusion. It’s forgetting what really happened. The leaf never clung to the branch, because without the branch, there would be no leaf: they are one and inseparable. Seeing more, there would be no leaf, branch, or trunk without the ground. Without the ground, there certainly wouldn’t be any tree at all: they are one and inseparable, just as they are one with and inseparable from the sun and the air and the gardener’s watering can and the bird who keeps it free from hungry termites. Eddie Van Halen’s guitar playing was so unique and powerful as to appear magical and other-worldly. Where did he come from? How did he come up with it all? Who influenced him? I want to know what musicians he idolized so that I can have some hint about him. One was Clapton, this we know, but this way of thinking is my delusion (again). Eddie’s playing didn’t just come from the musicians before him, it came from everything before him. It came from everything around him. Just like the leaf, Eddie Van Halen didn’t come into this world, separate and seemingly magical, he grew out of it to be part of it (something all the more magical). During a tribute to him, Howard Stern lamented by saying, ...all that talent now it’s just... gone., but this is the same delusion as mine. The countless fans and numberless guitarists moved by him are easy enough proof. The next bellwether who makes every jaw drop, makes every kid want to be like them, and appears to us as magical and other-worldly will be proof enough. My own story is proof enough. When I was 15, I was punched in the jaw by one minute and forty-three seconds occurring as the second track on Van Halen 1. It changed everything for me that came after it, all the way up to today. There is no 47 year old Buddhist priest in training (Shuso) without Eruption. There are no vows to liberate all sentient beings from suffering without Cathedral, or without the intro solo to Little Guitars, or the outro solo to Drop Dead Legs. Nothing comes from nothing. There is no me without Eddie Van Halen. We are one and inseparable. Everything comes from everything. Just like the leaf and the branch and the ground and the sun, my story (despite some minor details that may make it appear otherwise) is exactly your story, just as yours is mine. Together, we are everything that comes after October 6th, 2020; creating and changing in ways that are profound and vast. How blessed we are to be part of it; to be part of a universe that has the opportunity and privilege to bow deeply to the wind that inspired Eddie Van Halen, whose guitar sang to all of our brothers and sisters and to everything we cannot describe
