Celebrating love, community, and family!
I had a great time speaking at Destinations International's annual CEO Summit. Our Elephant in the Room fireside chat focused on the importance of equity and diversity in the travel industry. My biggest suggestions for CEOs -- ... 1) one perspective is limiting, diversity naturally generates more perspectives that meet the needs of more customers 2) accountability is key, set actionable metrics for bringing on new talent in leadership positions 3) don't let fear or naysayers stop you from making changes. All leaders know that everyone won't be satisfied with your decision. Taking action towards equity will ruffle some feathers if you're doing it right, and that's okay!

"Mental illness is not a crime, but we call upon the police as first responders in a mental health crisis, said Linda Rosenberg MSW, Columbia University Department of Psychiatry;
Citibank’s new woman CEO, Jane Fraser, is one data point in a sea of male CEOs. We can debate the consequences of this anecdote, but one thing is clear: her ascension suggests that a diverse board may be more willing to make the leap and hire an outsider CEO. One who isn’t a man.
When we know that companies with diverse boards are more financially successful, why set the bar so low for requiring only one 'diverse' board position? This quickly becomes a form of tokenism rather than harnessing the power and innovation that occurs when multiple perspectives are considered. For those who have a diverse board, how has that impacted your company? ... #diversity
Brené Brown studies human connection -- our ability to empathize and belong. In a poignant, funny talk, she shares a deep insight from her research, one that sent her on a personal quest to know herself as well as to understand humanity. Whether we recognize it or not, this work is important when actualizing Equity and Inclusion in any space.
With tart humor, Hayley Yeates makes the case that investing in cultural diversity is just as important as fostering gender diversity.
Whether company actions are authentic, or performative is left to be determined, but one of the clearest indications of a lack of commitment to DEI is the absence of funding designated for DEI efforts.
On this #WomensEqualityDay ...the best way to honor the generations of women who paved the way for me - for all of us - is to vote, and to continue their fight for all Americans to be able to do the same, no matter their gender, race, age, ability or Zip code.
One more thing about Company Culture: the more diverse your environment, the more challenges there will be. And that’s not a bad thing, as the benefit is so much greater! Fact is, you can no longer rest on the idea that everyone is like you.
"We need to do a find and replace in our vocabulary challenging the concept of diversity vs. equity."
It's really this simple.
Continuing our conversation from last week on 'Company Culture'...what are your organization's policies that help govern and guide your way of doing things? (and if you need to, rewatch last Monday's video to get caught up!)
"The unchallenged brain is not worth trusting."
What separates, on the one hand, a workplace that is miserable due to a boss who is a jerk to the entire staff and, on the other hand, a Title VII hostile work environment claim?
To mark the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, The Uncounted is a series that elevates the stories of women of color who have been disenfranchised and often written out of history.
