Only four unions in Pittsburgh had the courage to buck the incumbent mayor and endorse Ed Gainey, a real progressive who fights for workers. UE Local 667, the union of workers at the East End Food Coop, was one of them. Ed won the primary yesterday, defeating the current mayor by 46% to 39%. He is now on track to become the first black mayor of Pittsburgh.

On Thursday morning, State Rep. Ed Gainey, a candidate for mayor of Pittsburgh in the May 18 primary, addressed the membership meeting of UE Local 667, the work...ers at the East End Food Co-op. A friend of mine writes: "Still marveling at what Bernie accomplished last night. He saved millions by ensuring that furloughed workers, tipped workers, and gig economy workers would be included in the unemployment package, and then he successfully forced Republicans to back down from their attempts to cut the $600 weekly unemployment benefit Dems had put in the bill. This, in a Republican-controlled Senate. This is the kind of leadership we need right now!"
