While Quita Brodhead was an original member of Group '55 and a substantial figure in the American abstract art movement, she focused on figures and still lifes in her early career. However, in all of her work representational or abstract interaction of color is her primary means for rendering form and space. To see more paintings by Brodhead and the rest of the #Group55 exhibitions, visit our website to start planning your visit to Woodmere. --... Artist Csilla Sadloch writes on her process: "Weathering, splintering, natural decay and meandering growth of plants go unnoticed, usually. Since I walk often in the woods, I am confronted regularly with massive, upended roots, fissured, furrowed tree barks, quirky burls. Perhaps because of boredom or reverie, gnarly shapes grab my attention and incite my curiosity." For this week's #FloralFriday, enjoy Sadloch's "Spires."... -- Image: Spires, 2002, by Csilla Sadloch (Museum purchase, Charles Knox Smith Acquisition Fund, 2003). #WoodmereArt #MuseumAtHome #WomenAtWoodmere #WomenArtists

In Walter Elmer Schofield’s painting, bright summer light traverses the varied textures and warm creams and ochres of Montmartre’s distinctive stucco facades. Schofield immersed himself in the study of Impressionism while living in France at different times in the 1890s. He painted Montmartre while living in Paris. In fact, this painting is thought to have been the view from the window of the apartment he rented: an image of the very cafe and bistro he would have frequente...d every day. Doris Staffel (1921-2013) uses vertical lines to suggest forms that meld into mysterious spaces, and muted yellows, ochre, vibrant blues, and saturated greens to create transitions within them. Staffel exhibited in solo and group shows continually for 60 years, including a 2012 retrospective at Woodmere. Her work is in the collections of museums across the country. Staffel was a founding member of Group ’55, a community of Philadelphia artists who organized a series of exhib...itions and public forums across the city, presenting their work as a catalyst for vigorous public dialogue about the role of art and science in the postwar era. Samuel Maitin, who was born #onthisday in 1928, was a leading figure in #Group55 and known as Philadelphia’s Mayor of the Arts during his lifetime. Maitin was, among many things, a painter, sculptor, and political activist. He was a member of Group '55, and his work is featured in our newest exhibition. Group '55 is a group of Philadelphia artists that organized a series of exhibitions and public forums across the city, presenting their work as a catalyst for vigorous publ...ic dialogue about the role of art and science in the postwar era. He served on Woodmere's Board of Trustees and supported countless other organizations across the city, volunteering time and generously contributing designs for posters, invitations, emblems, mosaics, murals, and even building facades. His colorful, untitled sculpture, which sits in the front yard of Woodmere, is his only monumental sculpture in the city of Philadelphia. You can learn more about Maitin’s sculpture and explore it up close with our Straw Journey passport, a new and interactive component to our annual Straw Maze program. Our Straw Journey is open during regular museum hours. : Darryl Moran #woodmereart #museumathome #phillyartists #abstractart #outdoorsculpturs #sammaitin

Who remembers "Dreadful Delights," our Victorian era-inspired Halloween cake show? It showcased creepy, creative cakes by some of the best sugar artists and bakers in Philadelphia. "Dreadful Delights" was co-curated by Noelle DeSantis, cake artist and owner of Ella Vanilla cake decorating supply shop in Chestnut Hill. Her cake creation is featured below, titled "Victorian POEtry," inspired by, of course, Edgar Allan Poe, as well as Victorian funerary drapery and the popularity of dioramas and vignettes during that era. #WoodmereArt #PhillyCakeDecorators #PhillyBakers #SpookySeason

Join us Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7 p.m. for a Zoom lecture on Philly-based architect Louis Kahn. The lecture will be given by architectural historian Izzy Kornblatt, who will discuss how Kahn developed distinctive ideas about the purpose and importance of art that he brought to #Group55 in the form of a series of speeches given at group events. Those ideas reveal new dimensions to Kahn’s thinking and challenge long-held assumptions about the meaning of his buildings. Here's a beautiful bouquet to brighten your morning David Emil Joseph de Noter lived and worked in Brussels. It’s quarantine. Eat three desserts for breakfast. We won’t tell. "Valentine's Day Sweets" by Eileen Goodman is a sensuous, playful, and vibrating watercolor. She creates unexpected effects of tonality, layering of color, and luxuriant texture in a medium often difficult to control. One of the few artists to use watercolor on such a large scale, Goodman has said, "The larger scale forces a fluidity and freedom that I could not achieve in smaller formats, and working larger a...llowed the color I was using to become even more intense and deeper." There are four additional works by Goodman in Woodmere's permanent collection. -- Image: Valentine’s Day Sweets, 2003, by Eileen Goodman (Woodmere Art Museum, gift of Bill Scott, 2011). #WoodmereArt #WomenArtists
