Rest in peace, Edward Smith, WPSD Class of 1964.

Today, the WPSD Physical Education department hosted the seventh annual Dan Emerick Wellness Walk. Although it looked a little different than in past years due to social distancing guidelines surrounding COVID-19, the heart of the event remained the same. This Wellness Walk honors a great teacher, mentor, and deaf advocate - Dan Emerick. He always said "keep them moving." Dan was a Health and Physical Education teacher at WPSD for 34 years. He was a son of two deaf parents,... was a gentle giant and always had a positive spin on life. Dan dedicated his time to the deaf senior citizens group and supported many WPSD fundraising events. He was a fabulous husband to his wife, Nancy and a proud father of his daughter, Shannon. Dan loved WPSD as well as the University of Pittsburgh. The walk is also a way to promote physical well being and health at WPSD. At the end of every school year, the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf takes time to recognize those individuals, organizations, and businesses, who have played an important role in the success of our students and the strength of the school during the past year. Typically these awards are distributed during the dinner prior to WPSD’s Commencement Ceremony. Despite the restrictions placed on gathering in person surrounding COVID-19, we wanted to continue this importa...nt tradition and virtually recognize those who had a profound impact on WPSD and its students. Among these awards is the Alumni of the Year. The recipient of this award has demonstrated a measure of success in their field of expertise and has positively impacted the community in which they live and work. In addition, this person remains an example and model for the students of WPSD and has supported the WPSD Alumni Association in its efforts to invest in the school’s community. It is my pleasure to announce that the recipient of this year’s Alumni Award is Brett Shaffer. Congratulations, Brett!!! Thank you for being a positive representation of WPSD and the Alumni Association to our school, students, and community. See more
