Another reminder to my fellow bowlers about the much talked about balance hole rules, changing effective 8/1/2020.
Pretty amazing: 3 non-strikes in a 5-man team game. Congrats to Gregg Getzlow, Ron Testa, Tom Grimm, Tom Shucart, and Mark Hood.
Lots of evidence exists suggesting that bowling, at least in some parts of the world, originated as a religious ritual. Centuries ago, German peasants carried ...a club, called a "kegel," for protection. As a cleansing ritual they would occasionally bring the kegel to church, stand it on one end, and roll (or toss) a stone at it from a distance. The club symbolized the heathen, or devil. Peasants who succeeded in knocking over the club were thought to have defeated evil that is, cleansed themselves of sin. This explains the origin of the German word for bowling kegeln. And (at least in the U.S.) bowlers sometimes informally refer to their sport as "kegling." It may also explain why many churches included bowling lanes in their floor plans. At the very least, church lanes provided a welcome activity for parishioners and their family members often located next to the parish gym, basketball court or community hall.
