On January 12, 2021, DOJ announced its first civil settlement resolving allegations of fraud against the Paycheck Protection Program. SlideBelts Inc. and its President/CEO paid a combined $100,000 in damages and penalties, on top of repaying their $350,000 PPP loan, to resolve allegations that they made false statements to federally insured bankslying that SlideBelts was not in bankruptcyfor the purpose of influencing those banks to approve, and the Small Business Administ...ration (SBA) to guarantee, a PPP loan to SlideBelts. The settlement resolved False Claims Act and Financial Institutions Reform, Recovery and Enforcement Act (FIRREA) allegations made by the United States Attorneys Office for the Eastern District of California. Last week, our friends at the Public Interest Law Center secured a huge win, convincing the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to put to rest much of the confusion over mail-in ballots by: (1) authorizing the use of drop boxes for mail in ballots and (2) extending the deadline for receipt of ballots until 5pm on November 6, provided they are postmarked by election day. These are significant victories, but will only be fully realized if they are clearly and consistently communicated;... all the buzz has generated confusion. Yesterday, our client Judy Evans attended an anti-racism protest in Bloomsburg, PA with family and friends. It was the one-year anniversary of the death of her great-grandson, Tyler Evans, a 19-year old African American man who died at Columbia County Prison after 22 hours in a prison restraint chair. Ms. Evans is the plaintiff in a federal lawsuit recently filed by David Caputo and Zac Arbitman in the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania (Case No. 1:20-cv-722-SES). #prisonreform #justicefortyler
