50 years ago today- W.T Grant Co. Store Fire Downtown On February 12, 1971, 50 years ago today, The W.T Grant Store at 206-208 Main St was destroyed by fire. T...he alarm came in at 8:45am, just a matter of hours after Greenville Firefighters had returned to quarters after being out most of the night at the American Service Station fire at 294 Main St. Fire Crews had returned equipment to service from the previous fire just prior to the W.T Grant Fire being reported. In command of the Greenville Fire Department at the time was Chief Norman Matteson and Assistant Chief Hugh Fuzzy Shields. Greenville’s newly acquired 1970 fire engine, capable of pumping 1,250 gallons of water a minute, was on-scene in just a few minutes and was instrumental in getting the initial large caliber hose stream into operation leading to a prompt knockdown of the fast spreading fire that had engulfed the 2nd floor to the 3rd floors. This quick response was attributed to the on-duty, around-the-clock staffing of the Greenville Fire Station which allowed crews to respond immediately. Hickory Township (Now Hermitage) was asked to respond their new Snorkel aerial truck to attack flames at the front of the building while Greenville’s 1966 ladder truck covered the rear of the building. Considering the size of this brick and wooden 3-story building and the advanced fire conditions found upon arrival of the first Greenville fire engine, it was a valiant effort by area firefighters to contain the fire to the Grant building with adjoined buildings only suffering some smoke and water damage. The presence of fire walls between the adjoined buildings was also credited with keeping the fire from spreading to the attached buildings. Fortunately, these fire walls were required by Ordinance enacted by a then proactive fire-safety minded Borough Council in the late 1800’s. Council enacted the fire wall requirement after several catastrophic downtown fires that consumed entire blocks of buildings in the late 1800’s and also and prior to downtown being re-built after these downtown fires. The Grant building was later demolished and a one-story building was erected in its place and still stands today.

Brothers and sisters, I am pleased to announce that the Governor has signed into law HB 1673 which amends Title 35 (Health & Safety Act). This was an omnibus bi...ll that combined various SR6 recommendations into one bill that benefit all fire and ems services across the commonwealth. One part of the bill that we were watching was the reauthorization of the State Fire Commissioners Grant, It had sunset earlier this year and was not reauthorized. One of the exciting things about this reauthorization was the fact that after many hours of lobbying and multiple meetings with House & Senate leadership, we were able to get our Airport brothers & sisters added to the list of departments who are now eligible to apply for the grant. Prior language excluded them from applying and being awarded any grants from the Fire Commissioners Office. See more
