As a hopeful adoptive parent, the voices you need to hear are adoptees. They live adoption and are who it is best for. Listen to their experiences so you truly honor their needs and wants.
Our latest blog post is up! Find it on our website, https://www.absoluteloveadoptions.com/fear-of-birth-parent/ After reading Mother Mother by Jessica O'Dwyer, I was considering the significance of having two mothers and how that experience is for birth parents, adoptive parents and adoptees. What the story highlighted was the FEAR that adoptive parents often have of birth parents, and how that fear infiltrates the triad relationship. The blog this month explores that theme of Fear and specifically fear of birth parents, and how we might resolve that fear with knowledge. "The message of the novel is that no amount of distance or silence will let an adopted child forget that they are the child of two mothers. They are always both her child, and yours."
The phrase "Give up for adoption" is offensive. Yes, it has been common language for decades. No, that doesn't make it acceptable now. A woman choosing adopting is not "giving up" on anything, especially not her child. Whatever her reason is for choosing adoption, she typically considers every other option before deciding on separating from her child. Every choice is agonized over, and every one is part of the bigger plan that she is creating for her child. There is pain in... this separating that touches a place so deep inside her, in many ways she'll never recover. But she willingly accepts this for what she believes is best for her child. Giving up is not even close to an accurate description of what a mother does when she chooses adoption. So as Jody Cantrell Dyer says "Adoption is the most intentional process on earth". Support the birth mothers who survive this painful process by choosing to eliminate the phrase "give up for adoption" from conversation.
A new year is a mental new beginning. It allows for a reset and reboot. The energy around this transition has us buzzing around the potential for some fun additions to our brand! Stay tuned! Happy 2021!
