In this week’s Pets, Plants, and Productivity post, we’re featuring Zuleika, our WBC Program Coordinator. She’ll tell you about her ferocious kitty cat and how she likes to de-stress with art. What is your pet’s name and why did you name them that? I named my cat Turbo! My husband rescued him from being stuck next to the engine of a Turbo Mustang. He was only 2 weeks old and was the most ferocious thing ever, so it was only fit to give him the name. Here’s a fun fact: he wa...s born without a tail but doesn’t like to talk about it because it affects his balance. While some may see him as a scary lion, he's just a cat trying to listen to a good story. What activities or routines do you do to stay motivated, productive, and mentally or physically fit? For my Enneagram lovers, I’m a Type 3 over here . Labeled as "The Achiever", I sometimes fall into the habit of focusing on the tiniest details of whatever I'm trying to accomplish, probably for longer than I should. While this is helpful in situations that require a good eye, it's not really needed when creating art. It can be whatever you want it to be. Whether I paint a 30"x40" canvas or sketch a quick doodle, art gives my brain a break to let it do its thing without structure or rules. #assetspa #assetsstaff #ateam #pets #plants #productivity #businessforgood

When COVID hit, Laurie Myers-Newman, owner of Cafe 301 in downtown Columbia, had to shift the way she did business. With the guidance of ASSETS’ Entrepreneur Training Department, she began working on the creation of a curbside pick-up program and simultaneously applied for ASSETS’ first COVID Emergency Loan. A few weeks later, she received the essential funding she needed to reopen the restaurant and operate a successful pick-up program. Today, Laurie and Cafe 301 are experie...ncing the generosity of the community through successful fundraisers, sold-out pre-orders, catering requests, and plenty of pleased customers. Laurie was so grateful for the quick turnaround of her business that she recently donated some of the proceeds of a fundraiser to ASSETS to say thanks. Melisa, our Chief Program Officer, is next to be featured in this week’s installment of our Pets, Plants, and Productivity series. Melisa shares how she’s keeping active during the pandemic with her cool new workout equipment and her cute little pup. How have you used your ASSETS work-from-home stipend to increase your productivity, health, or sanity? Managing remote life while balancing mom life and myself was THE biggest struggle for me when the pandemic hit. With the gym... being closed, I jumped at the chance to invest in Les Mills On Demand fitness app and purchased some work out equipment. To say the least, it has been a game changer for me. I got back into dancing with their dance program. On days I felt like my anxiety was bubbling up, I’d take a 30-minute break to do body combat or body pump. My 30-minute at-home-workouts have been a lifesaver over the past few months!" Are you a cat person or dog person? And why? Lay it on us, people. Does your pet help or hinder your productivity? I am a big puppy lover and have been a #DogMom for about four years. This pupper keeps me entertained daily, and I secretly believe that he has a human soul. Because he is a lover of the outdoors, he has been a huge help with closing my ‘Move’ and ‘Exercise’ rings on target. He also makes for an amazing companion during weekend hikes!

We’re coming at you with another staff spotlight for our Pets, Plants, and Productivity series! This week we are featuring Randy, our Director of Finance and Analytics. A lot of us on the ASSETS team had to adjust to working from home, but Randy has been our work-from-home expert since he moved to sunny Florida a few years ago. What activities or routines do you do to stay motivated, productive, and mentally or physically fit? "It’s nothing revolutionary. I’ve worked from ho...me for a few years, and I’ve discovered that I generally feel very positive throughout the day if I can start my days early and have a solid 2-3 hours of work before any meetings. I have always loved mornings and the feeling of accomplishing something while still working on that first cup of coffee gives me a great high that I can carry throughout my day. I am still working on creating time for personal connection meetings and recognizing it is just as valuable as going through an agenda and checking tasks off the list." How many plant babies have you acquired during COVID and do you plan on getting more? "I have acquired 4 new plants since COVID started, and I have my eyes on a few others. Living in Florida, I’m lucky to have a pretty diverse range of plants that I can welcome to my home. My favorite has been a lemon-lime tree. I’m not entirely sure if it really grows lemons or limes. A simple Google search would probably yield me some answers, however, I am choosing to remain in the dark to live in eternal optimism that one day it may sprout something. I would be pretty thrilled if it happens. Secretly I’m hoping for a lime."
