Artist Alex Kostiw's risograph piece is the first in an on-going series of bookmark-shaped books on seemingly aimless notions. A Name is a brief, personal reflection on what it might mean to make a person. With images that allude to Greek mythology, Penelope, the name without a girl, stands in for a latent wish to have a daughter. Kostiw reflects on motherhood: "I've always felt tension between myself the idea of motherhood. I think I am a bit of a mother in many of my... relationships. But when I made book/mark 1, and people would hold it in their hands, I wanted to gasp and say, 'Please, be carefulyou're holding a part of me.'" Alex Kostiw is an artist, graphic designer, and educator based in Chicago, IL. She makes books and works on paper that explore liminal spaces in communicationgaps where intention and imagination meet. Rooted in design, printmaking, and literary criticism, her works experiment with poetic and reimagined text and image, visual structures of comics, and conceptually driven forms. Through loose narratives and imagery, they gesture toward the human impulse for storytelling as a means to understand reality, relationships, and ourselves. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4 | 4:30 6 PM LIONESS COLLECTIVE PERFORMANCE The Lioness Collective is a small but mighty group of artist-mothers based in Pittsburgh. In this presentation, Lioness Collective members Jessica and Olga discuss their particular mediums and the way that motherhood has shaped their artistic practices, and how the creation of communities for mothers in a society that seeks to isolate them has allowed them to pursue their creative goals in collaboration with... parenting rather than despite it. At the end of the presentations, the ladies of Lioness Collective will run a short story-time session for children in attendance. "My People" I find comfort in knowing: in my lineage, mamas and papas... scrunched their noses, shook their legs after sitting down too long, roared out happiness, squeezed my grandmothers so tight they protested the love - Yes, yes, the same grandmothers who enveloped my mothers, who folded themselves around my selves, who reached their fingers down as I do, so you could grab on and perform my steps, your feet floating in dance. Artist and mother Christen Russo of the Lioness Collective "My People speaks to the belief that life happens in the mundanity of the everyday; it always has, it will evermore, and in moments of isolation, the community that is formed by one’s forebears might loft you through to the next eruption of joyous presence." Christen Russo lives in Pittsburgh’s North Side with her musical husband, vibrant young daughter, and getting-nicer cat. She is a woman first, and her identity as a writer, poet, doula, wife, mother, friend, and optimist bring joyous texture to her being. Artist and mother Olga Brindar of the Lioness Collective reflects on the creation of "Master Copy (Diptych)," an installation of 2D print, painting, and collage: "Reimagining the idea of the master copy -- the study of a classical artist’s painting in order to gain insight into technique -- Master Copy (Diptych) is an empirical study of my 14-month-old daughter’s a priori artmaking. By attempting to understand her intuitive process through the imitation of her work, I am in a... sense attempting to unlearn my own art knowledge." A member of the Lioness Collective, a small but mighty group of artist-mothers based in Pittsburgh, Olga Brindar received a BFA with a focus on drawing and painting from Carnegie Mellon University, and has participated in a residency at the Burren College of Art in Ireland. She is a Russian-American artist whose works are typically larger-than-life and depict self-portraits, portraits of family and friends, animal and plant symbolism, and dream imagery. Artist and mother Jessica Moss reflects, "How I can create more opportunities in public spaces where mothers can practice patience, care and grace on and for themselves?" Her installation ‘Things I tell my daughter that I need to remind myself’, part of the Anthropology of Motherhood: Culture of Care Art Exhibition, does just that. Situated in the corner, previously deemed a site of disciplinary action for children, this piece offers a moment of relief, support and reflection... for mothers. The open chair invites any mother to take a seat and meditate on a guiding principle that they might have offered to their own child that they could benefit from receiving themselves: Get Your Balance, Slow Down, Take Your Time, It’s Okay To Cry, Just Get Back Up. A member of the Lioness Collective, a small but mighty group of artist-mothers based in Pittsburgh, Jessica Gaynelle Moss received a bachelors in Fine Art from Carnegie Mellon University; a masters in Arts Administration, Policy and Management from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago; and a masters in Studies of the Law from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. _______________ The Anthropology of Motherhood project is an ongoing curation of artwork and design that engages in the complex visual, material, emotional, corporeal and lived experiences of motherhood, care-giving, parenting, nurturing and maternal labor.
