Obituary for John Edward Brown John Edward Brown, 68, affectionately known as Big Ed, passed away peacefully while listening to ESPN at UPMC Jameson on April 23, 2020. John was born on May 23, 1951 in New Castle. He was the oldest son of the late John S. and Naomi Brown. Mr. Brown attended New Castle High School where he was a member of the concert choir, school musicals, and a regional singing group, Up With The People. He was a member of the high school’s track team a...nd helped his relay team win against Butler, when a member of his team knocked the baton out of his hand, and he had to run back to pick it up. The other runners were at least a quarter of the race ahead of him. With the baton in his hand, he took off, caught up and passed the others, giving his teammates a good lead. The sports headline read, From Goat, To Hero. It was said that if he would have been timed individually, he would have broken a record. John said that he had to do it because his father and grandfather, Earnest Brown, who lived in Butler PA, were in the stands and did not want to embarrass them. He graduated high school in 1969 then went on to attend New Castle Business College. John formerly worked at MSA Safety as a mail clerk and as a forklift operator, where he retired. He resided in Zelienople PA, until his brief illness. Mr. Brown was an avid sports fan of the Steelers, Pirates, and especially of the Penguins. He loved going to the Red Hurricanes football games and followed the talented players once they made it big. He also loved car racing, and enjoyed bowling, basketball, and golfing. He coached little league baseball and would take his little cousin, Lorrie Johnson, to show the boys, that a girl could play as well as any boy. He would take any of his many cousins, along with him to his sport outings. John was a talker and did not care if you were listening to him or not. He would call and say, Hey are you watching so and so? Mostly to see if we saw Malik or his cousin, Miles, who plays for the Eagles. One thing about Johnny was, he was a gentle person and never spoke bad about anyone. Johnny was preceded in death by his parents, paternal grandparents Earnest (Georgia Waters) Brown, and maternal grandparents Aubrey (Phenola Carter) Taylor. He will be sadly missed his brother, Richard (Barbara) Brown; sister, Debbra (James Byers); 3 nieces, Alia (James) McNeil, Ayanna and Araycia Byers,1 nephew, Richard (Leah) Brown II, 4 great nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will have a memorial service celebrate Johnny’s life at a later time. Services are entrusted to Charlotte A. Sheffield Funeral Home, Inc. 454 Chestnut St., New Castle, Pa 16101.
