We receive a lot of calls and questions as to the fireworks permissions and or restrictions in the law that was passed by the State Legislature last year. Below is a link that explains the law. The biggest takeaway for city residents is that fireworks cannot be discharged within 150 feet of an occupied structure, whether the residence is occupied at the time or not. As you can imagine, that limits a lot of areas of the city where it would be permitted to set off fireworks. Ev...ery question you may have should be answered by reading the law. If you need to ask if they are permitted in a certain place, that means it’s too close to call and you should assume the answer is no. Yes, we know that since this law went into effect that fireworks are no longer just the 4th of July. Yes, we are aware that a fireworks store opened up a mile away. We will respond to your fireworks complaints as always, but realize that a majority of the time the fireworks have either stopped or are being set off from a location that is nowhere near the caller. The sounds bouncing off of buildings and echoing often sound as they are much closer than they are. If we are able to determine that someone is violating the fireworks law and is causing a potentially hazardous condition to other structures, they will be charged accordingly. Our fire department is busy enough, they don’t need any house fires because of the irresponsible actions of others. Lastly, please realize that we must prioritize calls. We receive an average of 4000-5000 calls for service into our dispatch center a month. We will get to the fireworks complaints as soon as we possibly can.
