https://youtu.be/G-lN8vWm3m0 "Our sense of vision enables us to maintain a coherent view of the world". This short video discusses the importance of visual cues in verbal communication and how our brains can be influenced more so by what we see vs. what we hear. In today's masked world, speech understanding is much more difficult due to muffled speech and the absence of visual cues such as lipreading and facial expression. Let's go one step further and throw hearing loss ...into the mix. If you are speaking to someone with a known hearing loss, and you must wear a mask, please speak slowly and clearly, and also increase your volume. If they still are not able to understand you, please distance yourself >6ft. and remove your mask temporarily. If you work with someone who has hearing loss, please consider wearing a clear mask for their benefit. See more

Traveling to NYC anytime soon? Look for the Nissan taxi cabs as they are looped. This means that you can put your hearing aids in the telecoil mode and hear the driver speak to you directly through your hearing aids. Also there are many looped venues and theaters in NYC. Please click on the following link for a current list as provided through the Hearing Loss Assoc. of America. If you are not sure if you have telecoil capability, contact our office prior to your trip. https://static1.squarespace.com//November+2019+web+list++o

1800s......... The hearing aid on the left was worn in the late 1800s. It required two large and heavy batteries that connected to the body worn aid with a bulky cord. A monaural (one ear) earpiece was then connected to the body aid. Sound quality was poor to say the least. 2019....... On the right is a small, red 2019 digital hearing aid. It houses a lithium ion battery that lasts 30 hours on a 3 hour charge. The battery will last 5 to 6 years until it needs to be rep...laced. It is so lightweight that you forget it's in your ear. It will wirelessly connect to an iPhone and stream conversations, music, podcasts, iBooks, etc. directly to the aid. If you lose it, the iPhone app will locate it for you. Volume and programs can be adjusted through the remote app on the iPhone. Adjustments to the programming or sound quality can be remotely requested through the user's phone and the adjustments will be sent back to the user's phone to be received into the aid. Sound quality is excellent. The progression of hearing aid technology continues to amaze me. -thanks to my patient for digging this out of her basement to share with me. It belonged to her grandfather who was born in 1866.
