As birth professionals, we cannot ignore the impact current events continue to have on black maternal health. We know black mothers are 3-4xs more likely to die from pregnancy and birth related complications than their white peers. This is regardless of education, socioeconomic status, etc. We know black mothers are at an increased risk of hypertension, preterm labor, and other life altering complications. ... It is accepted by health organizations and leaders that systemic racism and associated stress can cause weathering in black women. This weathering can cause black bodies to age internally at a faster rate increasing health risks. Stress from racism can kill. And that's not even looking at the actual physical impact of being treated with biased healthcare. As we navigate yet another black life lost to unnecessary violence at the hands of those in power, we cannot be blind to the impact this has on black mothers. We are coming out of an unprecedented trial. We are bombarded with reminders both old and new of the potential violence black citizens can face. The impact on black maternal health from current events cannot be seen or addressed as political, opinion, or your personal feelings. We KNOW there is stress and we KNOW chronic stress is dangerous. If you are a birth worker, hold space. Don't center yourself if you're not a black birth worker. Don't disregard the personal impact current events are having on black mothers right now. Dig deep into your birth work skills and provide that space for those combating the dangerous impact of stress while working to grow and nourish a baby.

Sometimes there's a fresh shower, hair together, and a sweet snuggly baby while you enjoy things like sushi and the other treats you couldn't have while pregnant. Oh, and filters Other times there's messy hair, nursing baby, and shoveling a pb&j in your mouth. No filter. And honestly? This is more common than the latter. We're not put together IGer or influencers here. We are moms with personal experience and loads of professional training and education who get it. We know ...what it's like to love the fourth trimester while navigating the challenges of it. As postpartum doulas, we offer the kind of support that let's you have the first pic a bit more often.
