Franklin County Jr. Fire Academy 05.11.2020

Now that the week has comes to an end, the staff wants to thank everyone who helped put together the skills videos this week. It was really unfortunate we were unable to host the Academy this year and graduate 40+ Cadets better prepared to lead the future fire service. See you next year Class of 2021!

Check out the low profile maneuver challenge. How comfortable are you using an SCBA?

Are you prepared to save our own? Today's focus is on Rapid Intervention.

Truck day....How often do you practice the various ways to throw ladders?

Today we are focusing on Engine Company operations and stretching fire attack hand lines. Deploying attack lines should be second nature for us. When's the last time you stretched a line? How confident are you in selecting the correct line for the situation? How quickly can you be ready to flow water? No better way to improve than to put lines in the streets....Don't forget to control the door!

Along with encouraging firefighters to train on various skills this week, we can't ignore our goal of better preparing Cadets for life in general. One of the most detrimental aspects of not hosting the Academy this year, is missing out on the learning experiences resulting from tough life lessons with one another. It never fails, as fatigue sets in and challenges increase, frustration builds among one another. Spending day and night with roughly fifty others (some of which have never met before) for the entire week allowed us time to identify issues and work them out with all involved. We encourage everyone out there to consider what discipline, respect, integrity, and teamwork means to you, and how they contribute to your daily life. Past Cadets, do you still live up to these important tenets of the Academy?

Good morning. What a wonderful day to train! Today's focus is on our Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Knowing our turnout gear and it's limitations is essential. Most importantly we must don our PPE properly everytime, wasting no time when the bells sound. How quickly do you don your gear?

As many Jr. Fire Academy staff members are comfortably in their homes this evening with our families, we are still feeling a unique void. The void created by missing the opportunity to get to know, train and learn with the next generation of our fire service. Each year on this afternoon, parents from our local communities, surrounding states and last year even from France, entrust us with their teenagers for the week long Academy. Although the COVID-19 situation has preven...ted us from hosting this year's Academy, we want all the dedicated youth to continue to stay motivated to train and become better firefighters and most importantly better members of society. Starting tomorrow through Friday, we will be posting brief videos of basic fire service skills. We encourage and challenge all the junior firefighters out there to engage others in their stations to record and post their own videos in the comments, capturing them performing the skills of the day. The intent is to remain engaged with our Jr. FFs and to reiterate the importance of performing the basics efficiently and safely. We also hope is to foster positive dialogue among fire service professionals in times of growing negativity in society. With that said, negative comments will not be tolerated, but comments of encouragement are most definitely welcome. Our goal is to ultimately bring our fire service family together, as we have done year after year, despite the color of one's helmet or fire truck, or number on their shield or station. This year we're just forced to rely on technology to play a bigger role. Check back tomorrow...after of course you get in your early morning PT! See more

Rob (Chief Biesecker), time may heal, but this never gets any easier. We think and talk about you often. This year Nathan was presented with a memory box, it made us laugh and cry, but we reminded each other of your importance to the fire service and love of family.
