Dear patrons and friends, Due to new city-wide Covid guidelines, the Hill-Physick house will be ceasing all in-person tours until January 1, 2021. We will resume tours by appointment only once Philadelphia guidelines allow for us to reopen our doors. We want to thank those of you who did visit us in 2020. Your support during an extremely challenging year has been greatly appreciated. By visiting, renting, or participating in a fundraiser you played an important role in our co...ntinued stewardship over the four different museums that @philalandmarks operates: @thepowelhouse, @grumblethorpehistoric, @historic_waynesborough, and of course the Hill-Physick house. We are so thankful for the ongoing support of our constituents! Please consider making a tax-deductible donation at the link in our bio to help us to continue our work in the preservation of historic landmarks. We will be offering an outdoor-only pickup for our holiday wreath sale for those of you who placed preorders for wreaths or plants. Please send us a DM if you have any questions about the outdoor wreath pickup on 11/23. Many thanks to all of you! We look forward to seeing you in 2021.

Repost from @philalandmarks in anticipation of tonight’s Candlelight Tour! Gadzooks! Is that a crypt in the Hill-Physick House basement!? No, well, unlikely (for long). The earthen and stone insulated room is under the oldest part of the Hill-Physick House and was likely used by Dr. Physick and other residents as an ice room to keep many types of things cool and preserved throughout the year. Using blocks of natural, harvested, ice layered in sawdust and hay, this kind o...f space was only affordable to the wealthy during Dr. Physick‘s time. This usually uninterpreted room makes a special live-streamed appearance in tonight’s Haunted Hill-Physick by Candlelight Tour; learn more about it and other creepy places. Get your tickets now! This block-printed, classic arabesque style wallpaper greets visitors in our sunny front hall. With a closer look you can find a few friendly critters frolicking through the pillar and arch design, popular in many American hallway wallpapers during the Federal period. The principal pattern was made in the manufactory of Jean Baptiste Réveillon, a Parisian maker of flock wallpapers. His designs were featured in the apartment of Marie Antoinette, aiding in his popularity in the... late 1700’s. The very first hot air balloon was launched from Réveillon’s own garden in 1783, with a special paper covering made by Réveillon himself. A ballon in Versailles was launched a week later bearing the name Aerostat Réveillon (see final image). In 1789 Réveillon’s mansion was attacked and looted by an angry mob at the beginning of the French Revolution. All of his wallpaper, glue, furniture and paintings were burned. His wine cellar, containing 2,000 bottles of wine, was pillaged and consumed by the rioters. Réveillon and his family escaped by climbing a wall and fleeing to the Bastille, and later, to England.

Meet Eli and Netta, who got engaged in the Hill-Physick garden a few weeks ago! This surprise engagement was intimate and delightful. Our garden is a little oasis of nature in the city, and a perfect place to pop the question. Their photographer hid inside the house to capture these lovely photos. Send us a DM if you’d like more information on engagement or elopement packages at the Hill-Physick house!

Preservation doesn’t stop. Our work continues. And we need your help. Today is #GivingTuesdayNow, a global day of giving. In response to the health crisis our h...istoric houses have been shuttered since March which effectively stopped revenue streams like ticket sales and events. Without these vital sources of income we’re poised to lose 70% of our annual revenue needed for preservation and operations. PhilaLandmarks needs your help to preserve these important historic homes. Please consider making a generous donation to PhilaLandmarks. Thank you to our outstanding supporters. We look forward to the day when we can all be together again! Something Old & Something New Early this year, with the support of our fantastic House Committee, we renovated our kitchen. This room has a rather fascinating history there are still original yellow pine floorboards in this space dating back to 1767! Some helpful modern conveniences have also been added to make the kitchen fully functional. Swipe left to see before and after pictures, and read on to learn more about the history of this room! ... The Hill-Physick House began as a modest two story structure built in 1767 by carpenter Richard Armitt. When Henry Hill bought the lot in 1782, he wrapped his Federal-style mansion around the small home rather than demolishing it. Hill’s grand home was finished in 1786. The original two story structure was then used as a food prep space on the first floor, and as a portion of the servants quarters on the second floor. Prior to Hill’s acquisition of the property it was the home of John Nixon, who was the first person to publicly proclaim the Declaration of Independence on July 8, 1776. It was also the birthplace of Col. George A. McCall, a veteran and POW during the Civil War. It’s exciting to think about how much has happened in 250+ years that this room has existed. See more
