The February PTJ-PAL highlights all of the AMAZING 2021 CSM Platform (18) and Posters (35) presented by our amazing HPA the Catalyst section members! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication to make this virtual CSM a success! This edition also provides a great follow up research to an article from the August 2020 issue of PTJ-PAL which provided us with the Physical Therapy Spanish Proficiency Measure (PT-SPM). This research article provides support of the PT-SPM being a reliable measure to assess DPT student Spanish Proficiency. This supports potential to be utilized in the future to determine clinical readiness to communicate in the clinic with Spanish Speaking Patients. Check out the great slideshow below for more info & read the article in PTJ-PAL Archive https://www.aptahpa.org/general/custom.asp
We are excited to highlight HPA Centennial Scholar Cara Whalen Smith as our featured HPA member this March! Cara is a public health physical therapist who directs projects to improve health equity for individuals with disabilities. She first joined the HPA as a student after recommendation from a PT professor who recognized Cara’s interest in global health. Cara says she has remained a HPA member because of the tremendous value it has had on her career through its Special Int...erest Groups and Catalyst Groups. Cara describes the Centennial Scholars Program through HPA The Catalyst as an opportunity to receive training and mentorship and to engage in networking that will be valuable in shaping her leadership potential within physical therapy to guide the profession in addressing disability inclusion and ableism as a public health issue. The ability to engage in formal and informal dialogue with current and future APTA leaders is her main interest in applying to the program. She says, This program is an opportunity for me to share and build upon my ambitious ideas to advance the profession’s engagement around achieving health equity for people with disabilities with a diverse group of physical therapy professionals and to better prepare me to be a change agent within the profession. Cara hopes to do that by leading the development of continuing education content and resources for faculty and clinicians to address the Core Competencies on Disability for Health Care Education when training DPT and PTA students (https://nisonger.osu.edu//oh/corecompetenciesondisability/). Content to be developed will include suggested reading lists, links to existing training resources and videos, PowerPoint presentations that can be used in DPT program instruction, and a continuing education webinar on ableism in healthcare. These materials will specifically address Competency 1, she explains, which highlights conceptual and contextual frameworks of disability, civil rights and independent living history of people with disabilities and their access to services, how the social determinants of health directly impact people with disabilities, and disability as an aspect of diversity/cultural identity and not merely a negative health outcome. Cara says, I am excited to explore new ways to think and approach problems that face our profession. I hope to provide more visibility to the roles that PTs and PTAs can engage in non-clinical practice, specifically in the public health space. And I hope to provide meaningful and useful resources for faculty and clinicians to provide more competent care to individuals with disabilities that also demonstrates the value of HPA members to APTA as a whole. Congratulations to Cara! We are very lucky and proud to have Cara represent the HPA in the Centennial Scholar Program! The Nov. 2020 issue of the PTJ-PAL did an excellent job highlighting the importance of leadership in the physical therapy profession. The research in one of the articles focused on our very own LAMP Leadership program. We are fortunate to have the lead author and developer of the LAMP leadership develop program, Dr. Jennifer Green-Wilson, discuss highlights of the article. We learn about the large themes and value leadership development skills that participants gained from th...e program.
