Have you finished your holiday shopping? Between 1872 and 1978, many residents and visitors of the Lackawanna Heritage Valley could probably be found shopping at Samter's -- "Scranton's largest apparel store." With holiday displays rivaling that of New York City department stores, this upscale clothing store was a major draw for shoppers in the heart of Scranton. The building as it currently stands on Penn Ave was built in 1923. #MondayMemories

Charles Edgar Patience (1906-1972), an African American sculptor who lived and worked in Wilkes-Barre, took the carving of anthracite to an unprecedented level.... While many miners in northeastern Pennsylvania sculpted small souvenirs in coal as a hobby, Patience raised the form to high art, exhibiting works at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. In 1954, the Reverend Leo F. Flood, the third president of King's College, Wilkes-Barre, commissioned Patience to create a two-ton anthracite altar for the college's chapel. The Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum in Scranton, Lackawanna County, exhibits sculpture by Patience, including busts of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, two of three presidential portraits he created during his lifetime. First Lady Bird Johnson displayed his art at the White House. See more

From the Museum Collection: Book. "Lackawanna/The Route of Phoebe Snow/Brief History of the Railroad with Photographs/and Description of Its Motive Power." Blue... & white cover, black print, inset. Photo of box car with "Phoebe Snow" slogan. 20 pp and covers. Photographs & text includes No. 546 (like no. 565 in STEA collection), new diesels. History of Phoebe Snow and news of her return to DL&W Railroad Advertising on rear cover. 1946-1949. L 9.6, W 23.2, T 0.2 CM. Put out by the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. It has a brief history of the railroad and a full foldout pictorial of the Lackawanna’s motive power from the beginning through 1944. The photos of locomotives have descriptive text including the date that they were built (the latest dated 1946). Since the Phoebe Snow as a named passenger train was not included (it was created and first run in 1949), the issue date is suggested as 1947-1948. The advertising image of the fashionable woman was used by the railroad starting in 1904 and running to 1917. It was discontinued until 1944 when it returned. illustrations are shown of her in 1904 and an updated one of "Today." On November 15, 1949, the DL&W inaugurated a new streamlined passenger train named after its long-dormant promotional symbol. Launched by DL&W president William White, the new Phoebe Snow represented the DL&W's modernization of its passenger train fleet, and image. The Phoebe Snow ran on a daylight schedule between Hoboken, New Jersey, and Buffalo, New York, making the 396-mile trip in about eight hours. The DL&W was a U.S. Class 1 railroad that connected Buffalo, New York, and Hoboken, New Jersey, 400 miles. Incorporated in 1853, the DL&W was profitable during the first two decades of the twentieth century, but its margins were gradually hurt by declining traffic in coal and competition from trucks. In 1960, the DL&W merged with rival Erie Railroad to form the Erie Lackawanna Railroad.
