Trivia Tuesday answer! Julia Child's first cookbook was Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She was a co-author with Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle. The book brought French cuisine into the kitchens of the middle-class American family, and reshaped the gourmet dining scene. Julia was in her late 30s when the book was published, and kickstarted her career as a newspaper columnist (for the Boston Globe) and author. Her last book was published posthumously by her nephew in 2006.

Trivia Tuesday answer! The oldest recipes are written on the walls of an Egyptian temple, the Temple of Sobek, just north of Aswan in Upper Egypt. The recipes are for medicine and mummification... not something you're going to find in your grandmother's Betty Crocker cookbook or popping up in your Pinterest feed! The temple is a dual temple, dedicated to both the crocodile god Sobek and to Horus, the falcon god. It's located on a shallow bend of the river Nile, in a perfect s...pot for crocodiles to bask in the sun. Hence, the ancient Egyptians prayed to their crocodile god to keep them safe from the crocs. It's fun facts like this that help our students make connections that can accelerate the learning process. Anytime you can combine travel or history with reading, you've got a winning combination.
