MHSA recommends Youth Volunteer Corps of Philadelphia! YVC Philadelphia is a city-wide youth development organization providing Philadelphia youth with service learning and opportunities. As an organization, we have surpassed 21,000 hours of service, with the Masterman chapter proving to be a consistent partner with 4,000+ hours of community service in the past 5 years. We are currently at risk of shutting down as an organization due to insufficient funding and would greatly appreciate your support to help us continue our mission to the Philadelphia and Masterman communities. Please message the YVC Facebook page to further discuss our organization and its impact at Masterman! If interested, please donate at this link: https://www.yvcphiladelphia.org/campaign.html

Allison Fortenbery and Aden Gonzales (Masterman students) were among the students who urged an end to school police at the Board of Education hearing Thursday night. They did so with some historical perspective: They are two of five students from Julia R. Masterman Laboratory & Demonstration School who have secured approval for the installation of a state marker to commemorate the 1967 Philadelphia school walkout, during which student protesters were beaten by police. These are challenging times, and it’s even more important now that we recognize and appreciate the pivotal role our educators play in our children’s lives. Teachers change the lives of millions of children every day inspiring a lifelong love of learning and making a difference in well-being and long-term success. Their work and impact move us more than words can describe. Sadly, we can’t gather together in person to honor our teachers this year. But we want to encourage YO...U and your student to reach out and thank the Masterman staff. You can write heartfelt messages of appreciation, send videos or even gift cards via email. Faculty email addresses can be found here https://masterman.philasd.org/about-us/faculty We encourage you to also #ThankATeacher on social media. We are thankful for the generosity, thoughtfulness and support of our Masterman community. Be well.

Check your inbox for a message sent from infinite campus and the HSA about tonights Zoom talk on Student Wellness with Dr. Beth Rosenwasser scheduled for 730pm. Last month, the Academic Affairs Committee of the HSA asked you about your concerns for students’ well-being during the quarantine. We found some patterns in your non-academic concerns: the challenge of forging and maintaining virtual relationships, difficulties in establishing a schedule, the lure of sleep and digital distraction and mourning the loss of major rites of passage. There are no easy answers for these and other issues. But to help provide some guidance, we invite parents for a virtual Zoom talk with Dr. Beth Rosenwasser, a past guest speaker in our Generation Stress series last.

From Ms. Brown: Masterman students have been volunteering as online tutors. They have formed a group of six students called TeensTeach, and they are offering their services to the rest of the Masterman community in case anyone is interested, or struggling with the transition to graded materials online. They are also on Facebook and Instagram @teens_teach.
