Did you know that by taking control of your health you can not only combat obesity but heart disease too?! Obesity contributes to heart disease in many different ways but here are three of the most important: 1. Obesity can increase your bad cholesterol, increase triglyceride levels and lower your good cholesterol.... 2. Obesity can cause your blood pressure to rise. Individuals with obesity require more blood to supply oxygen and nutrients to their bodies which can cause an increase in blood pressure. High blood pressure is a common cause of heart attack which is sadly more common in individuals with obesity. 3. High blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart attacks are not the only medical conditions you need to worry about when you have obesity. Individuals with obesity have a much greater chance of developing diabetes. According to the American Heart Association, at least 68% of people 65 or older with diabetes also have heart disease. Here’s a quick nutrition tip: Chard, an earthy, sweet green, is available in a variety of colors (ruby, red, white, green) but the most common varieties are Swiss and rainbow. One cup serving (cooked) is rich in vitamins K and A. Chard is also a good source of vitamin C, magnesium, and potassium. Adding some to your recipes can add color, nutritional value, and that Fall harvest feel!

Many people think living a healthy lifestyle is just for adults. Adolescents, however, also need good nutrition, exercise, and sleep to help support their growing bodies. By setting health goals as a family, you’re not only getting more time to bond, you’re able to achieve goals as a team. In fact, when families work together at losing weight and developing healthy habits, they have greater success! Consider a family game of dodgeball, or a bike round around the park! The omega-3 found in wild-caught, cold-water fish have been found to help regulate heartbeat, reduce blood pressure, decrease blood clot formation, and reduce overall inflammation; all of which decrease the risk for heart attack and stroke. Omega-3 rich food is also cholesterol-lowering helping reduce triglycerides and LDL cholesterol. Other omega-3 rich sources include walnuts, flaxseeds, and chia seeds.
