2021 Tobyhanna Millpond #1 Ice Harvest Canceled We had some concerns about whether or not we could harvest ice this year, socially distant, during a global pandemic. We searched the records to see how our ancestors harvested ice during the pandemic of 1918. But as it turns out, 2020 was a tough year for almost everything, including ice. Sorry to say, Mother Nature did not cooperate this year either. We had 6 inches of ice in mid-December, but the heavy rain on Christmas opened up most of the lake. As of today, we only have 2" of ice. The forecast for the next couple weeks does not bode well for ice making. Happy, healthy 2021, everyone, stay well. Hope to see you in 2022.

2020 recap (or lack thereof!) For those of you who may not have heard, we were unable to harvest ice or even have an ice harvest demonstration on Saturday. In addition to freezing rain, sleet and a hour of very heavy snow, we experienced 30 mph wind gusts. We suspect that even the old timers would have spent the day inside working on the ice tools and equipment. ... We did manage to harvest two cakes of 5 clear ice on Friday as we were hopefully preparing for the harvest. Special thanks to our friends who came and helped lay out the field and prepare for the harvest that didn’t happen. Oh well, maybe next year! Thanks for your interest.
