Celebrating Banned Books week... this is Beth Transue, our Information Literacy librarian and liaison librarian for departments such as Biological Sciences, Nursing, Health, Nutrition & Exercise Science and Modern Languages. Beth enjoys the Harry Potter series (who doesn’t?!), which was banned due to the focus on witchcraft.
Celebrating Banned Books week... this is Sarah Myers, our Public Services Librarian and liaison librarian to several departments including History, Education and Engineering. Sarah’s book choice is the British classic, Canterbury Tales, which has literally been challenged, censored, and banned for centuries for its racy stories and profanity.
Celebrating Banned Books... Kimberly Steiner, the Interlibrary Loan Specialist, recommends The Kite Runner by Khalid Hosseini. This book was banned in Afghanistan due to its depiction of the Taliban. It was also banned in the US in some schools due to its mature themes and content. There were also some challenges due to its promotion of Islam.
Celebrating Banned Books week... this is Liz Kielley, our Technical Services Librarian. She is also a Liaison librarian to several departments, including Communication, Psychology, Social Work, Theatre & Dance and Music. The banned book that she chose is Lady Chatterley’s Lover by DH Lawrence. As you can imagine, this book was banned for it’s raciness - it was published in 1928, after all!!!
Celebrating Banned Books week - this book was chosen by our Evening and weekend circulation supervisor, Keith Jones. 1984 by George Orwell was banned in the USSR for being anti-communist and in the US for being pro-communist!!
Celebrate Banned Books week - this is our newest staff member, Rachael Jasitt! Rachael is our Evening Circulation Supervisor and she chose Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The Harry Potter series has been banned due to the witchcraft aspect of the books, as well as for the violence portrayed in a children’s novel.
Celebrating Banned Book week - our Acquisitions Technician, Loni Allen, picked The Color Purple by Alice Walker. This tale of sexism, racism and poverty was banned in schools across the country since 1984x due to its graphic content and situations of violence and abuse.
Look how much fun you could be having at the Library Scavenger Hunt - it’s not too late to sign up. Come by the ILL office between 8:30-4 any day this week to register. Play by Friday and get your name in a drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card. @ Messiah University Murray Library
Celebrating Banned Books week... this is Brian Frank, our library cataloging expert! The banned book he chose is John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. It was banned in some schools in the 30’s for vulgar words and in the county which was portrayed in the book because it didn’t paint a very flattering portrait of the area.
