Spring time is road construction season along the Lincoln Highway. Here's a great early RPPC scene of paving the Lincoln Highway in New Oxford around 1920. When... that state purchased the private toll roads between 1913 when the Lincoln Highway original route was designated and took over maintenance and improvements for the highway, the road they purchased had been neglected for many years. The York and Gettysburg Turnpike was especially known for its poor conditions and for a time even the Lincoln Highway Association recommended that motorists take a detour from York through Hanover before heading back to Gettysburg to rejoin the Lincoln Highway original route. Thankfully, the the early 1920's the Lincoln Highway across central Pennsylvania was upgraded similar to this scene here in New Oxford. Today, it remains a challenge for the state to keep up with necessary maintenance and improvements for the many miles of our state and federal highways. Limited financial resources remain one of the most significant hurdles for better roads. Post by Lincoln Highway Association, PA Chapter. Submitted by Elaine Shorb, thanks! See more
